Shirley was born Sept. 17, 1925, in Holyoke, Mass., to the late William B. and Susan (O'Donnell) Rogers, the second of five children. Shirley's early years were spent in Massachusetts until she moved with her family to Putnam in 1940. She graduated from Putnam High School in 1943 and from The William W. Backus Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1956.

On April 27, 1957, she was united in marriage to Stephen J. Lavin Jr. Sadly he predeceased her in 2004.

Over the years she had been employed by SNET as a telephone operator, at Mansfield State Training School, The William W. Backus Hospital, United Workers of Norwich and at Norwich Hospital for many years as a psychiatric head nurse.

A 50 year resident of Ledyard, she was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Gales Ferry and served as a committed member of the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Group. She was also a member of the Daughters of Isabella, St. Mary Frances Circle #796, The William W. Backus Hospital School of Nursing Alumni and Putnam High School Alumni.

Shirley leaves three sons, Stephen J. Lavin III of Aurora, Colo., Neil E. and Thomas J. Lavin, both of Ledyard; five grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; and a sister, Mary Santerre of North Grosvenordale; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Gales Ferry. Burial will follow at Avery Stoddard Cemetery.
