Mystic - Shirley L. (Day) Reuss, 79, of Mystic, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at home.
Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Day, Ruth Headen and step-father, Arnold Headen. She is a graduate of Stonington High School, Class of 1951. While raising her family, she was active in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and sports for both her son, John and daughter, Deborah. She loved the Boston Red Sox and the UCONN Huskies men and women basketball; she just loved sports. In her spare time, she also was an avid reader.
Shirley worked for American Velvet for a brief time, and later at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital where she was a bookkeeper. Eventually, she went on to work for the former J. Solomon & Co. in New London for 15 years until her retirement.
She is survived by her two children, John E. Reuss and his wife, Kathy, of Chicago, Ill. and Deborah L. Reuss of San Diego, Calif.; brother, Robert Day and his wife, Helen, of Naples, Fla.; two grandchildren, Jesse John Edward Reuss and Chelsea Lynn Reuss; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Her family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today (Friday, Sept. 21), at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic. A service will be held at noon Saturday, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery, Route 27, Mystic. (Gathering of friends and family will follow at the Reuss residence).
