Waterford - Sol Henry Krasner, 89, beloved husband and father, died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, in Waterford.

Sol was devoted to his loving wife, Phyllis, for 53 years.

Born in St. Louis, Mo., he was the son of Thomas (Tevya) Krasner and Besheva (Dewoskin). Sol learned to love physics at a young age while a student at Manley High School and then Herzl Junior College in Chicago. He earned a scholarship for undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago, however his education was interrupted midway through his first year when he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. Stationed in India, he served in the Signal Corps as a radio communications technical specialist.

After completing his service, he completed his undergraduate education at UCLA, then returned to the University of Chicago where he earned a master's degree, then Ph.D. in physics. After working for several years at the Office of Naval Research in Washington, D.C., he once again returned to the University of Chicago as Dean of Students for the Division of Physical Sciences and assistant to the chairman of the Physics Department, where he served a distinguished 25-year career. At the University of California, Sol touched the lives of many students and faculty colleagues, guiding the division through periods of student turmoil in the 60s, then through many the changes and breakthroughs that took place in the physical sciences through the 80s. Sol was a renowned teacher who kept his students engaged in and out of the classroom, an avid tennis player, a folk dancer, and a longtime supporter of the State of Israel, Hillel, and other Jewish-American causes. He was a lover of life and a blessing to those whose life he touched.

Sol is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Norma Krasner; and his children, Barbara Becker of Arnold, Md., Allan T. Krasner of Orland Park, Ill., Donna Greenwald of Columbia, Md., and Alan S. Krasner of East Lyme. His memory will also be cherished by 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren with two more great-grandchildren on the way.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Sam, Leon, William Krasner and his sister, Lillian Singer.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, at King David Memorial Gardens, Falls Church, Va. The family will observe a memorial service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the home of Alan and Robyn Krasner, 12 Jean Drive, East Lyme.
