Thomas Michael "Tom" Ryan Obituary
Stuart, Fla. - Thomas Michael Ryan, 89, of Stuart, Fla., and formerly of New London, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018, at home with his loving companion of 22 years, Alice Young, at his side.

Tom was born Feb. 17, 1929, in New London. After graduating from the Bulkeley School, and later attending Mitchell College, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army and was based at Fort Benning, Ga., and later in Boston, Mass., as part of the 745th AAA Gun Battalion. Tom married Wanda (Onifer) Ryan in 1956, and soon after moved to Waterford where their four children grew up and attended the local school system.

After 45 years working at Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in Groton, as a technical writer for the technical publications department, Tom retired to Islamorada, Fla. where he met Alice. They lived there on the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean for four years before heading to The Florida Club in Stuart.

Tom enjoyed many years of travelling, hiking, skiing, fishing and digging into good books. Tom and Alice enjoyed travelling the world including several trips to Hawaii, a riverboat cruise in Europe and a visit to his ancestors' homeland in Cloonbunny, Ireland. He also looked forward to reuniting with his ski buddies on annual trips to Vail, Colo. Tom's love of hiking spanned 60 years and includes reaching the peaks of numerous mountains from Colorado to New Hampshire and trekking the Grand Canyon several times, the last just a few years ago with some of his grandchildren. When he landed in Islamorada, Tom became an avid fisherman and would spend many days out on the water with his friend Captain Jack. When not hiking, skiing, fishing or travelling the world, or recounting many of his experiences with his vivid and colorful storytelling, "Papa Tom" could be found in his favorite spot on his lanai reading a good adventure novel or cheering on the Red Sox, Buckeyes, Fighting Irish, Hawkeyes and Huskies.

Tom is survived by Alice Young of Stuart, Fla.; two daughters, Susanne Currier and her husband Stephen of Phoenix, Ariz., and Sally Cavanaugh and her husband Dale of Bremerton, Wash.; as well as sons, Steven Ryan and wife Julie of Newburyport, Mass., and Scott Ryan and wife Karen of Portland. Tom leaves behind nine grandchildren, Zachary, Travis, Dillon, Jack, Dakota, Ben, Eric, Kayley and Matthew; four great-grandchildren, Colbie, Ace, Brooks and Ayden; and many nephews and nieces.

Tom was predeceased by his parents, John Joseph Ryan and Mary Agnes Toolan Ryan; by Wanda Ryan; and by his siblings, John, Bill and James Ryan, Kay Morgan, Peg Butler, Mary Esposito, Louise Appleby, Vivian O'Brien, and Marion Ryan.

Our family would like to express our deepest appreciation for all of the recent care provided by his in-home caregivers and Hospice of Stuart, Fla.

At Tom's request, services will be private.
