Trudy Smith Obituary

Groton - Trudy Smith of Groton, passed away peacefully Monday morning, June 6, 2011. It was a beautiful sunny morning and the birds she loved were in flight accompanying her precious soul.

She was born in Cheltenham, England in 1909. She leaves behind her husband, Earl and son Gary, both of Groton.

A truly liberated woman ahead of her time, she adapted the world to herself. As a young woman, Trudy bicycled solo from Philadelphia to Key West, ferried to Cuba, returning home a month later. In her later years, she became a well known ornithologist, lecturer and advocate of her beloved birds. The stories she would tell of her adventures, and people she met over her lifetime, had no end and were always colored with humor. She loved hiking, making craftwork and her Red Sox.

Her devotion to caring for her "two boys" was unswerving to the end, and filled with love.

Trudy had decided there would be no funeral, and was cremated as was her wish.

If you are inclined to donate in her memory, please consider the Groton Bible Chapel, or do so with your favorite charity, for she loved all creatures great and small.
