Waterford - Walter S. Eccard, 92, of Wintergreen Drive, Quaker Hill, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.

He was born in Circleville, Ohio, on Oct. 1, 1919, the son of Walter and Elizabeth (Eitel) Eccard.

He was the husband of Alice Lorenza (Thomas) Eccard, who predeceased him on Sept. 16, 2006. He was a graduate of Walnut Township High School in 1937, and graduated from Capital University in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was assigned to Walter Reed Hospital as a medical technician. During his time in the service, he was able to meet General Eisenhower, General Pershing, Dr. Fleming, Sir John Dill, as well as President Truman.

He taught mathematics, zoology and anatomy and physiology at the former New London Junior College (Mitchell College) and returned to Ohio and received his master's degree from The Ohio State University in 1952. He taught grades 6 through 8 as well as serving as principal in South Bloomfield before returning to New London to teach math and science at the former Bulkeley Junior High School, eventually becoming principal. He retired in 1979 as principal of New London Junior High School.

Mr. Eccard was active in the Town of Waterford serving on the RTM and the School Building Committee.

He is survived by two sons, Walter T. Eccard and his wife, Joan, of Shallotte, N.C.; Paul B. Eccard of Quaker Hill; a daughter, Ellen Marie Henson and her husband, Wayne, of Norwich; four grandchildren, Anne Smith and her husband, Jade, David Eccard, Adrienne Henson, and Brian Henson; as well as a great-granddaughter, Mollie Anna Smith.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, Cedar Grove Ave. Interment will follow in Jordan Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London.
