Helen Bucko Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 13, 2010.
New London - Helen Bucko of New London passed away at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital Sunday morning, Oct. 10, 2010, from complications associated with a massive cerebral stroke. She died a day before her 90th birthday.

She was born in Holyoke, Mass., on Oct. 11, 1920, the daughter of Matthew and Katherine Leyko, subsequently residing in Norwich.

She was predeceased by her husband, Det. Lt. (Ret.) Konstanty Bucko, New London Police Department, on June 26, 2003. They together enjoyed 63 years of love and happiness.

Mrs. Bucko graduated from Norwich Free Academy and The Old Home Hospital School of Nursing in New London. For many years, she worked as a nurse at the Odd Fellow Home in Groton where she was introduced to her husband-to-be by mutual friends. Mrs. Bucko was an accomplished artist and seamstress. Many of her paintings are still enjoyed by family and friends. Many hours were spent quilting and providing beautiful hand stitched garments for her daughter and relatives. During the holidays, family and friends received cards written in her beautiful artistic and elegant handwriting.

With a outspoken questioning attitude, Mrs. Bucko was a concerned patriot never satisfied with today's governmental charades.

Mrs. Bucko is survived by a son, William C. Bucko and wife, Linda, of Uncasville; a daughter, Katherine George and husband, Richard, of Oakdale; brothers, Raymond and wife, Beverly Leyko ,of Preston and Matthew and wife, Elaine Leyko, of Norwich; a sister, Carol Amedeo and husband, Humphrey, of Watch Hill, R.I.; five grandsons, three great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons with whom she enjoyed many pleasant hours.

She was predeceased by brothers, Anthony Leyko of South Portland, Maine and William Leyko of Willimantic; sisters, Sophie Brazowski of Norwich and Marion "Nell" Dobiejko of Oakdale; also a granddaughter, Amy George of Dana Point, Calif.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. l4, at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Metro Center, 350 Church St., Hartford CT 06103.

Kash,
My heart is with you. I will never forget falling down a flight of stairs at your house and your mom saying,"Patty, if you keep doing that you can't come back!" I never did it again, but remember your mother's words every time I start down a flight of stairs! Your mom left this earth the same way she lived on it-no nonsense. I always admired her for that. With much love, Patty Homola
