Bernard Nowakowski Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 14, 2010.
Stonington - Bernard Joseph Nowakowski, 65, of Stonington, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010, with his family at his home of 35 years.

Son of the late Anthony and Mary (Hrabos) Nowakowski of Norwich, he is survived by his wife of 41 years, Phyllis (McLaughlin) Nowakowski; daughter, Lynn Nowakowski Mooney; sons, Adam and Richard Nowakowski; grandchildren, Chris, Josh, and Samantha Nowakowski Mooney; his brother, Richard Nowakowski of South Venice, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, William and his sister, Mary Massie.

He was a graduate of NFA and Three Rivers Community College. He had been an employee of Connecticut College for the past 23 years and previously worked for the Central Vermont Railroad.

Bernie was a Vietnam veteran and avid British motorcycle and antique car enthusiast. He had a genuinely kind nature, selfless dedication to family and friends, and enjoyed spending time with his three grandchildren. His cerebral and provocative sense of humor and approach to life proved him to be an exceptionally unique and admirable human being.

A service in celebration of Bernie's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, at Calvary Episcopal Church, 27 Church St., Stonington, with a short reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to The American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org or by calling 1-800-227-2345.

Phyllis, Lynn and boys, I was so sorry to read of Dad's passing and forgive me for being so late in sending many thoughts and prayers your way. I have such fond warm memories of your Dad from many years ago when my daughter was young and at your house frequently, she had such fun and Dad was so humorous. Lots of prayers go your way . Bernie was great. I never had the chance to actually work with him, side by side, but we would often chat before he started his shift.....politics, cars, mechanical issues and how to solve them in a swamp yankee kind of way. His humor was quick and dry....with a wry smile and a twinkle in his eye.......you could always tell......Bernie knew a little more.

I'll miss our afternoon chats

Phyllis, Lynn and the boys, I am so sorry to here of Bernie's passing. He was a genuinly nice guy and a joy to have as a neighbor & friend. I chatted with him for quite awhile the last time I was in town and I am glad I had that time with him. Please accept my sympathies.

Bernie went from a stranger to a great friend in a short period of time. I was going through tests to have brain surgery and we talked about the test we were going to have, many of which were the same. He gave me a family pendant to have when I had my surgeries and even bought me a scarf for my head after. We had a special relationship that is difficult to understand. He was very kind and had cat treats for several of the neighborhood cats who would come to visit him. I miss you Bernie:)
