Catherine Kuhn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 16, 2010.
Groton - Catherine S. "Kay" Kuhn, of Raleigh Court, Groton, formerly of Hooksett, N.H., beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went to her eternal rest on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010. Shewas at home surrounded by her loving family. "Kay" was predeceased by her husband, Retired Command Master Chief, Raymond R. "Pappy" Kuhn.

She was born on Sept. 4, 1917, in Manchester, N.H., the daughter of William and Pearl Senechek. She attended a one room schoolhouse in Hooksett, and graduated from Central High School.

Kay married the love of her life, Ray, on April 15, 1939, at Sts. Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church in Manchester.

Kay is survived by her son, Raymond Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Spokane, Wash.; four daughters, Elaine Tolsma and her husband, James, of Hasting, Mich., Michele Way and her husband, William, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Bonnie Farris and her husband, Robert, of Groton with whom she made her home, and Donna Ingram and her husband, Dale, of Mystic; two sisters, Olga Downing and Elizabeth Sue Horne of New Hampshire; a brother, Robert Senechek of Florida; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Eva, Mary, and Helen; brothers, John, Mike, and Leon.

She enjoyed every aspect of homemaking, especially sewing where she excelled in formal attire, wedding and prom gowns. As a devoted military wife and compassionate mother, she passed along her legacy of love and caring for others to her children. To her friends, Kay was known as "the queen of common sense" because of her simple, to-the-point and no-nonsense profound wisdom. Kay traveled extensively with her husband of 65 years and they particularly enjoyed visiting their children and grandchildren all over the United States, with Alaska as a highlight.

Catherine's love of God began in the Russian Orthodox Church, took root at a Billy Graham Crusade, and wound through many Navy chapels and churches of various denominations. She spent many years serving Groton Bible Chapel, Camp Berea, and the Awana programs. Her retirement years brought her full circle to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

We will miss Mommy Kuhn, her love of garden tomatoes, a good pair of shoes, and her singing of, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" at the kitchen sink.

We love you mom and will never forget you!

The family wishes to acknowledge Hospice Southeastern Connecticut and Kay's special angels, Jessica, Stephanie, Debbie, and Becky.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Dr., Groton. Interment will be on Monday in New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m Friday at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St.

Donations in her memory may be directed to Hospice Southeastern Connecticut, 225 Dunham St., Norwich CT 06360.

To my cousins,
I was very sorry to hear of Aunt Kays passing. I remember how excited we all would get when we saw Uncle Ray and Aunt Kay pull into the driveway. She was always smiling; that smile was as big as her whole body. She was and always will be one very loved, very loving, very respected lady. She will be remembered with love.

Dear Donna & Family,

We were very sorry to hear of your mother's passing but know she is well & rejoicing in heaven with your Dad & her Savior, Jesus. May this help to comfort you in this sad time. We remember her working in the kitchen at Groton Bible Chapel & always smiling. She also gave very good advice when needed. Our prayers are with you at this sad time.

Sincerely,

Gloria & Don Pontious

Donna and family:
I read, with tears in my eyes, of the passing of your mom. She was a great lady. I remember the smile she always seemed to have. And, the twinkle in your dad's eyes whenever asked how she was. When my grandmother passed, a friend sent me the words below. I can only pray that they bring you the same comfort they have brought to me.

IN MEMORIAM
In countless gentle, kindly ways she lived a sermon all her days. Believing in the folk she knew and making friends her lifetime through
Enjoying life, its works and fun, she sought the best in everyone. Living her faith from day to day, she sowed good seed along the way.
Now death has set her spirit free in fields of immortality, to claim a task of greater worth than any she had known on earth.

MISS ME BUT LET ME GO
When I come to the end of the road, and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom-filled room. Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not for long and not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that we once shared. Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey that we all must take. And each must go alone. It's all a part of the Master's plan, a step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know, and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds. Miss me, but let me go.

Donna and family...words cannot express my heartfelt sympathy to you all at this time. I have such fond memories with Donna at the old home in Navy housing talking with your mom. She always had a smile and a gentleness about her, I loved her! My deepest sympathy and love to you all.

A special memory that I've chosen to share is having hot popcorn & watching "Honey West" on the black & white in the living room and/or reading "American Rifleman" on the living room floor. We live on through the rituals that we pass on. For me, that ritual is making popcorn in a sauce pan. Thanks Grandma.
Another nugget that I'd like to share is, you never know when it's the last time that you'll see someone, so choose those goodbye's carefully as they might be the final thread that hold the memories together. If I would've known that the last time I saw her was going to be the last time I saw her some 25 years ago well, maybe I could've thought of something more clever to say than whatever it was that I did say.
I can't make it to the ceremony, but know this. I'll be doing something in her rememberance at exactly the same time you are. As you look around, take a moment to witness the legacy of her love around you.
Thank you,
Dan
