The charter fleet from Niantic, New London and Noank, throughout the 1940's, 50's and 60's was generational. Captains were followed by son's who had mated for their fathers. The Rathbuns, Wadsworths, Wilkes, and Adams' were just a few. Most are gone now but not forgotten. Ben and the others of that time are legendary in Long Island Sound. They fished without the benefit fancy electronic gear using compass and watch, visual ranges, rip tides and instinct.

I worked withor Capt. Benjamin summers from 1958 - 1962 as his mate on the Anna R. I learned valuable work ethics and a spirit of adventure that served me very well in my professional career. I value Ben not only a mentor, but a great friend,

To All the Rathbun Family:
Benjamin F. Rathbun created a beautiful legacy for his family. He also inspired more chapters in Noank's seafaring history. Significantly, he was supported by his wife, Rosalie, and by all those who respected the man who appreciated Noank. His life is part of the family heritage and a gift to all of us.

To the Rathbun family, Cherish your memories of Ben, I sure do. I had the privelige of working many surveys with Ben and Capt. Pete Fisher. Some were cold trips to CapeCod or RI. Ben always was happy to be on the water regardless of weather. I wish I could remember half of his naughtical lore. I'll miss him always. Brian McDonnell, McDonnell Marine Service

I did not know Ben very well however I did know his wife Rosie. I did know that Ben was a very accomplished sailor but was unaware of how many accomplishments he had completed in his full life. I thought it was great that he had an "a-wake" party in 2003. When you think about it, a celebration of his life while he is still here means so much more then when he is gone. To the Rathbun Family, you should be proud of your Ben and what he contributed to mankind. May he RIP. With Sympathy, L. Michael Clancy GTPD "retired"

Be Still
Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.
Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.
If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Ben was just the best. I still have great memories of the wit and wisdom he expressed on our long rides back and forth to fishery meetings in the 1990's. Like many others, I now miss him on his passing.

You may not remember me, but I have many fond memories of growing up with your children and hanging out in the Smotel. Noank will not be the same without Capt. Ben physically there, but his spirit will live on with the Anna R. God bless and I pray for all of you in your time of morning.

I will certainly miss Capt. Ben.
I worked my way through college working as Ben's mate on the Anna R. Those summers change my life for the better. I still share the stories of helping Ike catch a fish and getting pluged in a dory by a hugh sword fist off the coast. our prayers and thought are with the family. From Leon Cammen, National Sea Grant Director, via Connecticut Sea Grant: On behalf of the National Sea Grant Office, I want to express our condolences to the family. During my earliest days with Sea Grant, I had the pleasure of meeting Ben in his role as a member of the National Sea Grant Review Panel and I was struck by his knowledge, his good humor, and his just plain common sense. He was just as comfortable dealing with PhD scientists in the universities as he was with fishermen on the docks and he was respected by all of them. It was a privilege working with him. He will be missed.

The staff at Connecticut Sea Grant at UConn Avery Point remember Captain Ben for his laughter and his seafaring tales, and we will always appreciate his cheerful, unselfish service to Connecticut Sea Grant, Sea Grant Extension, and to the National Sea Grant Review Panel. He was an amazing man and he will not be forgotten.

When I was a teenager I would jump at every opportunity to go fishing with Ben and his son, Franklin because I knew that day was always a wonderful day with two very special friends fishing, eating and just plain joking around. I learned many things about life and people. I will treasure those memories for years to come. Thank you Ben!

On behalf of the Adams family, please accept our condolences. Ben is legendary among fishermen. My father, Claude Adams (Wanderer) fished alongside Ben's father and the old Anna R and knew Ben as a youngster. My brother, Claude Adams, Jr. (Lady Margaret) did the same alonside the later Anna R.
