Shirley A. DelPrete

Port Orange, Fla. - Shirley A. Overcash DelPrete, formerly of Niantic, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, in Florida.

Mrs. DelPrete was born on March 19, 1927, in Providence, the daughter of George and Alice (Coughlin) Hodgson.

She married James DelPrete in April of 1998 in Port Orange.

She was employed for many years as a telephone operator at SNET and Lawrence & Memorial Hospital before moving to Florida, where she retired from JC Penney. Shirley had a wonderful life, loving family, lovely homes, eight beautiful grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Even though she was lucky enough to find two men to share her journey, her first love was the sound of waves hitting the shore and the sand beneath her feet. Her journey, no matter where she lived, started and ended with the ocean. She was an avid Red Sox fan and Jim a Yankee fan, resulting in many interesting evenings.

Mrs. DelPrete is survived by her husband, James of Port Orange; sons, Richard (Theresa) Overcash of Palm Bay, Fla., and Russell (Maureen) Overcash of Niantic; daughters, Sherleen (Scott) Hanson of Niantic, and Colleen (James) Tynan of Norwich; her brother, William Hodgson of South Kingstown, R.I.; and sister, Doris Grenier of Foster, R.I.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Richard L. Overcash; sisters, Margie Thornton and Norma Forgue; and grandson, Richie Overcash.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at St. Agnes Church, Haigh St., Niantic. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday Aug. 9, 2011, in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Lake St., Niantic.
