Charles Hargrove Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 2, 2011.
Holiday, Fla. - Charles H. Hargrove, 58, of Holiday, Fla., died on July 27, 2011, after several months' illness.

He was born Oct. 24, 1952, in Northampton, Mass., to Theodore L. and the late Barbara P. Hargrove of Sanford, Maine.

In addition to his father, he leaves a son, Travis; a daughter, Jennifer; his companion of many years, Paula Kubes, all of Florida; sisters, Mary Jane Poirier of Worcester, Mass., Tracy of Sanford and Samantha of Portland, Ore.; brothers, Christian of S. Hamilton, Mass., and Jonathan of Scituate, Mass.; three cousins and ten nieces and nephews.

Charles grew up in New London, attending public schools and Montauk Baptist Church. He played baseball, earned scholastic honors, and acted in Mitchell College plays before striking out on his own for the simple life. His quest took him throughout the country, for a time in rural Connecticut and Maine before settling in Florida. There he worked as a building contractor while raising his family and tending his gardens.

He was well read, an eloquent writer, and a penman of elegant and lucid style. To the end he retained his passion for baseball. He played well into his 40s and his year- round devotion was to the Red Sox (also, Patriots and Celtics, in season).

A private memorial service will be conducted Oct. 22, at the family home in Sanford. His ashes will be scattered on his mother's grave in Massachusetts, in the ocean off Old Orchard Beach, and on remote property he owned in rural Maine. Symbolically reuniting him, on his birthday, with the mother he loved, the sea he held in awe, and the wilderness he longed for.

Charles,We were very saddened by your passing at an early age.The best part though is the life you did have, you lived it as you wanted.I wasn't too happy at first when we first met you.In the years that followed though we learned to love your scense of humour, your smiling and laughing eyes. You were a brillaint man and could tell a good story I always wondered if you really did all the things you said you did or traveled the places you said you went to:)
Everyday ,anyway I look I see you to the top of the roof that you replaced. To the back yard fence you and Benja fixed. My bathroom sink.Even that awesome plant you grew and gave to us .You were such a great gardener:)
I know you knew how much we appreciated you all the years. Always nice to us and respectful.Maybe a few curse words too:)But coming from you was all natural so was takin good naturadley.
Charles, thank you for being you and getting to know you was an honor. You were good to my sister Paula and I could tell how much you loved her.I know you felt her pain losing her son not quite 21.that was tragic enough and now you:(
The last year you suffered so much and you didnt deserve that! All our heartfelt prayers from family and friends for you ,certainly made a smooth trip to heaven and in the loving hands of our Lord.I am sure our Benja gave Jesus the load on you:)
We miss you

Tracy, Mary Jane and Charlie's family,

We were kids the last time I saw Charlie, but remember the quiet, very charming and handsome young man that he was. I hope that your memories bring you comfort at this time. My thoughts are with you. Tina Farace

I haven't seen Charlie since high school. We went through a lot together when we were young men. I'm really pleased to hear that he had done as well as friends and family described. I never forgot him and always wondered how he made out. Godspeed.
