East Lyme - Robert J. Bulmer, 78, of East Lyme, died peacefully at home, on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born June 24, 1933, in Hartford, to John Bulmer and Agnes Jane (Holda) Bulmer. Being a graduate of UConn with a bachelor's and master's of science degrees in physics, he enjoyed a long and storied career as a scientist of applied research in underwater acoustics at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in New London. He also served as science advisor to the command at COMNAVSURFLANT in Norfolk, Va. and CINCUSNAVEUR, in London, England.
He was a long-standing clarinetist in the Westerly, R.I. Band and served as its librarian and concert announcer. He had a strong involvement in the community and served on the East Lyme Board of Education and the Zoning Commission.
He is survived by his children and their families, son Steven and Sandy Bulmer, and their daughter, Jenna of Cromwell; daughter, Cheryl and Mick Townend and their daughters, Courtney and Jasmine of Gosport, UK. He leaves a brother, Jack; and seven nieces and nephews.
Robert is predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years, Marion.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2012, in St. Matthias Church, East Lyme. Calling Hours will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2012, in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Lake Ave., Niantic.
