Groton - Modesto "Ben" Bayna of Walker Hill Road, Groton, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at his home.

He was born on July 10, 1924, in Bani, Philippines, the son of Gregorio and Queteria Bayna.
Ben was married to the former Consuelo Perez on Oct. 30, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pa.
Mr. Bayna was a U.S. Navy veteran, retiring as a chief in 1967. He then went on to a career as a manager for the former W.T. Grant store in Groton, and finally as a supply clerk for the U.S. Navy at the Supervisor of Shipbuilding office at Electric Boat in Groton.
Ben had been an active member and former usher at the Shepherd of the Sea Chapel in Groton, and in his later years, had attended the Sacred Heart Church in Groton. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve and the American Legion.
His other survivors include four daughters, Connie and Cita Bayna, Kitty Winkler, Remi Taflan; five sons, Mo Jr., Nate, Cefe, Ricky, and Art; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Ben was predeceased by a son, Greg, a sister, Soledad, and a brother, Patricio.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at Sacred Heart Church, 56 Sacred Heart Drive, Groton. His burial with military honors will follow in Starr Hill Cemetery, Groton. Visiting hours will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St.
