Norwich - Marie Anne (Discola) Biederka died Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, New London.

She was born in Norwich, the daughter of Andrew James Discola and Mildred Elizabeth (Carr) Discola. A 1943 graduate of Norwich Free Academy, Marie went on to study nursing at Stamford Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1946. Marie wed John Dominick Biederka on Sept. 4, 1948 (John passed April 24, 2004). Together they embraced two philosophies; a strong family and hard work.

Marie began her life's work as a nurse at Norwich Hospital in 1946. She left Norwich Hospital during the 60s to raise her family, and returned to state employment at the Niantic Correctional Facility, retiring in 1979. After retirement, Marie taught a CNA program sponsored by the facility for several years. Marie was a dedicated professional who willingly shared her talents and knowledge. She was an avid reader and created many beautiful handcrafted items as hobbies. She will be dearly missed by those who cherished the gifts she shared.

They had two children, Joanne Holland (husband Justis), son, Jeremy Shawn (wife Elizabeth), and great-grandson, Theodore, and John William Biederka (wife Kathleen: sons John Franklin, Charles, Andrew), Chris Leitkowski, Laura Lewis, and Kurt Leitkowski.

Marie is predeceased by a sister, Helene Esterby; and a brother, James Discola.
