Norwich - Raymond Francis Hocking Jr., 70, of Norwich, died peacefully on the morning of May 3, 2014, at Regency Heights of Norwich, with his family by his side.|
He was born Sept. 10, 1943, in Denville, N.J., the son of the late Raymond and Rose (Cannon) Hocking Sr. He graduated from Kearny High School in New Jersey, class of 1961, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.
He married the love of his life, Sandra Occhionero Kent on Aug. 2, 1987, in Quaker Hill. They enjoyed 17 healthy years until a catastrophic accident left him paralyzed from the chest down. Needing round the clock care, he spent the last nine and a half years of his life in Regency Heights nursing facility. His 38 years as a career power lineman took him to various states until his untimely retirement after eight years as a foreman at Bozrah Light & Power.
Besides his wife of 27 years, he leaves his step daughter, Gina Marie Kent; a niece and nephew, Abby and Brendan Hocking; sister in-law, Karen; an aunt, Ruth; cousins, Lois, Samanthia, and Trisha Mauro, who loved him as a father. He will also be missed by the Occhionero family, several dear friends, and three children that were special to him and called him "papa", Nya Mauro, Carter and Charlee Jenkins.
He was predeceased by a brother, Hugh Hocking.
His wife would like to thank his "family" at Regency Heights for his outstanding care, especially during his last days. He loved them dearly.
Family and friends are asked to gather at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2014, for a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial in the Cathedral of St. Patrick, 213 Broadway, Norwich. All committal services are private.
