Helen Barbara Sobolewski Obituary
Paducah, Ky. - Helen Barbara (Stefanski) Sobolewski, 94, died Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Superior Care Home-Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Paducah, Ky.

She was born to Stefania (Kornaczka) Stefanski and Frank Stefanski on July 29, 1919, in New London, where she attended public school and became a 1937 honor graduate of the former Williams Memorial Institute, an all-girls school, faithfully attending the reunions of her graduating class throughout her long life. She spent her childhood and much of her later life involved in the activities of her church, Saints Peter and Paul Polish National Catholic Church in New London.

After entering the work force, she married Joseph S. Sobolewski, who became a longtime employee at Electric Boat in Groton and who predeceased her in 1973. They made their home in Uncasville, where she enjoyed bowling with the Montvillettes. Later in life Helen proudly earned, with honors, a liberal arts associate's degree at Mitchell College in 1968.

For over 25 years, she was employed as a secretary with the Naval Medical Research Laboratory at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, after also being employed at both the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the former Underwater Sound Lab in New London.

After she retired in November 1980, Helen remained involved with the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She also traveled as often as she could, mostly to Europe and to sites and events in America, especially enjoying a cruise to Alaska. Her most memorable trips were to Eastern Europe, especially to her parents' native Poland and to Russia.

In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by brothers, Stephen Stefanski of Waterford and John Stefanski of East Lyme; a sister, Pauline (Stefanski) Mroczkowski of Norwich; two sisters-in-law, Helen Stefanski of Waterford and Katherine "Kitty" Stefanski of East Lyme; and a nephew, Jackie Stefanski.

She is survived by a son, Joseph W. Sobolewski and wife, Patricia, of Benton, Ky.; a brother, William Stefanski of Quaker Hill; along with many nieces and nephews and three cousins, most residing in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London is assisting the family with a private funeral service to be held at Byles Memorial Home at a date and time convenient to the family. At the request of the deceased, there will be no calling hours and no flowers.
