Obituary Condolences

Groton - Earle A. Williams, 55, passed away unexpectedly on July 31, 2014, at his home in Groton.

He was born April 18, 1959, in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of the late Olive (Kirchgatter) Dennis and Raymond Williams. He lived in Ft. Louden, Pa., before joining the U.S. Navy as a cook.

Earle was proud of his military service aboard the USS Greenling and the USS Trepang. He also served as part of a joint Army/Navy attachment at the Presidio of Monterey Defense Language School.

After leaving the service, he worked at Electric Boat and in maintenance at the U.S. Postal Service in Groton, until he was disabled by a rare neuro-muscular disease called dystonia.

Before his disease, Earle was very active in the community. He volunteered with his daughter's Girl Scout troops and with Cub Pack 41 and Troops 13 and 17G. He was presented with an Oscar Award from the Boy Scout Mohegan District. He was the first recipient of the Jacqueline Nixon Community Service Award from Groton. He volunteered with The Bear That Cares and other groups.

When his disease progressed so he could not walk well, Earle could be seen in Groton proudly displaying an American flag on his wheelchair. Earle was active on a Facebook page for dystonia called Neuronauts, where he made many friends.

Earle was devoted to his wife, Diana (Abell). They were married Nov. 8, 1980.

He loved and was proud of his daughter, Antonina and her fiance, James Thorstenson, of East Lyme. He is is also survived by his step father, James Dennis; siblings, David and Donald Kolodziejczyk, Diane and her husband, Jeffrey Berg, Raymond Williams, and Deana and her husband, David Gada; nieces and nephews, Richard Williams, Darian and Karen Stevens, Randy and Ron Abell, and Molly Rodriguez.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at Smith Lake Cemetery, Route 1, Poquonnock Road, Groton.
