Westerly - Anthony "Tony" Sawyer Horton, loving husband of the late Jean (Gencarelli) Horton for 53 years, father, and grandfather, passed away at The Westerly Hospital on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at the age of 80.

Born in Providence, he was the son of late Clarence and Helen Horton of Westerly. Tony graduated from Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass., and Clemson University and served in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant. A great athlete, Tony was a left-handed pitcher who played baseball for the Hill Toppers minor league team. Tony was an avid golfer and member of the Winnapaug and Stonington Golf Clubs. As a member of the Watch Hill Yacht Club, Tony served on the Race Committee and was a past Race chairman.
Tony will be sadly missed by his sister, Paula Coogan and her husband, Ted, of Rumford, R.I.; his brother, John Horton and his wife, Judy, of Atlanta, Ga.; his three children, Anthony Sawyer Horton Jr. of Santa Monica, Calif., Mary Beth Keefe and her husband, Lawrence, of Westerly, and Kit Caldicott and her husband, Daniel, of Maynard, Mass.; and his five grandchildren, Andrew Keefe, Brian Keefe, Matthew Caldicott, Liza Caldicott, and Liam Caldicott.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Clare Church, 62 Crandall Ave., Westerly. The Horton family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly. Burial will be in St. Sebastian Cemetery.
