Stuart Wickson Obituary
Groton - Stuart Wickson, 90, passed away on Aug. 24, 2014, at Fairview Nursing Home in Groton.

He was born on Nov. 8, 1923, in Scranton, Pa., the son of Harry and Clara (Paulson) Wickson. Upon graduating from Robert E. Fitch High School, Stuart served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1946, as an aviation ordnanceman first class, stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with three stars. Stu had a passion for aviation. He had a private pilot's license and flew single and double engine aircraft as well as a gyrocopter he built from a kit.

He was married to Marilyn Beebe on June 8, 1947. She passed away in 1999.

Stu owned and operated Stu's Service Station in Groton before relocating the business to Gales Ferry. Upon retiring in 1981, he worked for Constitution Coach, traveling the United States and Canada.

After selling the longtime family home on Gales Ferry Road, he lived in Holiday Touch Assisted Living Communities (Windham Falls Estates) in Groton and Manchester.

Besides his love of aviation, Stu had a love for horses. He was a member of the Connecticut Morgan Horse Association and owned several New England and Connecticut champion horses. He also enjoyed spending time in his workshop and caring for his lawn and flowers, as well as fishing local lakes and ponds, and he had a talent for playing the organ.

He is survived by three daughters, Penny Holmes of Westbrook, Laurie Wickson of Oakdale, and Susan Steward of Waterford; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and two brothers, David Effman of Croydon, N.H., and August Effman of Stonington.

He was predeceased by two sisters.

Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 13, 2014, at Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. There are no calling hours.

Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., is assisting the family with the arrangements.
