Robert G. "Glen" Shelton

Ledyard - Robert "Glen" G. Shelton, 89, of Ledyard, passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2012, at Fairview.

He was born Sept. 4, 1922, in Wood County, Texas, the son of Sidney and Amie G. Shelton. He was married to Carolyn (Walmsley) Shelton for 50 years; she predeceased him in 1993. Mr. Shelton was a former deacon at Union Baptist Church in Mystic. He was a chief petty officer in the Coast Guard, he was stationed at the Coast Guard Academy and served in the Pacific during World War II. After leaving the Coast Guard, he was employed at Pfizer in Groton, first in the production department and then as an electrician. He also worked as an electrician helping to open the Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He retired from Pfizer in 1985.

Mr. Shelton's family was his world. He was a loving husband and father, and all who knew him loved him for his honesty, kindness, sincerity, and keen sense of humor. As he grew older, he became Dad to anyone who needed one, and we were proud to share him. He was the quietest man in any room, but the one you remembered as the nicest. He was firm and fair, but no pushover. For him, right and wrong were real and not negotiable.

It seemed he could fix anything, and he took great delight in figuring out how things worked, and how he could make them better. If he didn't have the right tools at hand, he would make his own. He loved to read, clipping out articles for his kids to read so they could discuss the material together. Although he had only a high school education, he was extremely intelligent and enjoyed learning new things all the time and sharing what he had learned. He was very interested in Nature, appreciating its beauty and mysteries, and loved such programs as Modern Marvels and the History channel. He also loved music, which could be heard playing in the background whenever he answered his phone.

He was above all, a Gentleman.

Mr. Shelton is survived by his daughter, Linda S. Fox, of Groton; and sons, Glen A. Shelton and his wife, Judith, of Groton, David B. Shelton and his wife, Suzanne, of Colorado; and grandson, Brett M. Shelton of Colorado.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2012, at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton. The funeral service will be private.
