Old Lyme - Katherine Colean Etherington of Hobe Sound, Fla., and Old Lyme, died Sunday, June 24, 2012, at Jupiter Medical Center in Jupiter, Fla. Kathy or "Mrs. E", as she was sometimes called, passed peacefully in the presence of family and loving care givers after struggling with a long illness. She was 83.

Born in Peoria, Ill., Kathy spent most of her childhood in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Smith College. She cherished her marriage of 47 years and her role as mother to her four children. For much of her adult life, she balanced her time between Jupiter Island, Fla., and Old Lyme. She had many friends in both communities who will recall her talent as a painter, her impromptu singing at social gatherings, and her importance as a friend.
Kathy was predeceased by her husband, Edwin "Ted" Etherington; her son, Ken Etherington; and her daughter, Marion "Mimi" Etherington.
She is survived by her sons, Deac Etherington and his wife, Kim, of Santa Cruz County, Ariz., and Bob Etherington and his wife, Rose, of Nashville, Tenn.; their daughters, Lanie and Teddy Jean Etherington, Kristin Coulter and son, Lee Rowland.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, at the Congregational Church of Old Lyme, on the corner of Lyme St. and Ferry Road. A memorial service will be held in Florida at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Forest Hills Funeral Homes Young and Prill Chapel and Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, Old Lyme.
