Amy Clark Obituary

Stonington - Amy (Savin) Clark, 89, of Stonington, passed away peacefully, Thursday, July 5, 2012, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.

She was a lifelong resident of Stonington, born on Jan. 15, 1923, the daughter of Bridget and John Savin. Amy was the beloved wife, for 50 years, of the late Russell Clark, who passed away in 1995. In 1951, together they built, with their own hands, the house in Quaimbaug where she lived until she died.

In February 1945, she graduated from the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, and was then commissioned in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant, where she served through the end of World War II.

Amy's entire professional career was spent working as a registered nurse. She was the head nurse at the Mary Elizabeth Nursing Home in Mystic. The last 18 years of her career, she spent as a nurse in the Town of Stonington School System before retiring in 1985. Many students looked for reasons to visit her office in order to be encouraged, entertained, and even treated for illnesses or minor injuries.

Amy loved sports and was a loyal fan of all Stonington High School sports teams. She and her husband, Russ, spent extended winter holidays in St. Martin and the Gulf Coast of Florida. She also loved to travel and was fortunate enough to visit Europe, South America, and had multiple adventures across the U.S. in their camper.

Amy was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church in Stonington.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, as well as by her brothers and sisters, Mary Savin, William "Bill" Savin, Maurice "Mo" Savin, Dorothy "Dot" Rupp, and George Savin; and her daughter-in-law, Susan Clark.

Amy leaves behind a son, Russell L. (Lee) Clark of Stonington; a daughter, Carol (Clark) Mazour and her husband, Thomas, of Wallace, N.C.; four grandchildren, Joshua Clark and his wife, Marcella (Terranova), of Westerly, Courtney Clark of Stonington, Bridget (Mazour) Rutherford and her husband, Matthew, of Washington, D.C., and Meghan (Mazour) Hof and her husband, Justin, of Golden, Colo.; and seven great-grandchildren, Caelynn Carroll, Mollie Clark, Mallorey Clark, Orla Hof, Nora Savin Rutherford, Matilda Hof, and Clark Rutherford. She also leaves behind extended family and wonderful neighbors who were a great comfort to her, in recent years particularly, Chris Kulaga, Melanie Fritz, and Kim Lily.

Her family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, 51 Williams Ave., Mystic. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Stonington on Friday, July 13. Burial at Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic will immediately follow the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Stonington High School Athletic Boosters Club, 176 South Broad St., Pawcatuck, CT 06379.
