Mary Emerich Obituary

Ledyard - Mary Charlotte Moertl Emerich, 84 of Laurel Leaf Drive, Gales Ferry, passed away on Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at her residence.

Mary was born Jan. 5, 1928, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up at St. Aloysius Orphanage where she would meet her eventual husband and father of her three children, Wilbur. She worked as a secretary and administrative assistant for many years with several Cincinnati area manufacturing companies.

She married her husband, Wilbur, in October 1960, and subsequently lived in Chicago, Groton, Key West, Fla., Portsmouth, N.H., and Norwich, following his Navy career, before settling in Gales Ferry in 1971. In later years, she ran a daycare business from her home. She was a mother of three children and grandmother of eight.

She enjoyed her grandchildren, entertaining with family and friends, Golden Pizza, her regular monthly "Nocturne" social events with friends, the Cincinnati Reds, the Ledyard Colonels, the UConn Lady Huskies, and helping to organize community and church events. She was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church for many years, serving on the Ladies Guild and various church, festival, and bazaar committees. She was a longtime member of the Ledyard Boosters Club, as well as the St. Aloysius Auxiliary, and the Gales Ferry Cemetery Association.

Caring but firm and always recognizing the value of those around her, she never failed to bring the best out of people. She liked a good joke, a big laugh, Halloween, April Fool's Day, neighbors, good company, and Budweiser from a can.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur, in 1998.

She is survived by her son, Stephen Emerich and Christie Woodhall of Groton; daughters, Charlene Emerich Heist of Groton, Heidi Hecker and her husband, Dale, of Merrick, N.Y.; son, Eric Emerich of Topsail Beach, N.C.; and grandchildren, Shane, Heather, Ally, Austin, Katie, Amaris, Aaron, and Rachel, as well as Annie Emerich; and many close friends throughout southeastern Connecticut and across the nation.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1650 Route 12, Gales Ferry. Interment will be in Gales Ferry Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at Our Lady of Lourdes.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be directed to the Gales Ferry Cemetery Association, PO Box 144, Gales Ferry, CT 06335.

Eric, Heidi, and Steven,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I did not know your mother as well as I wish I had but I know her and my mother were very close. My mother would always say what wonderful people your parents were whenever I mentioned Eric's name. From reading all the sentiments written here that is obviously the truth. I hope you can find comfort in knowing that your parents are happily reunited today and their only hopes now are for your continued happiness in life. Know that they are both at peace and watching over you still. God Bless you all and I hope you can find your peace soon.

Mary and Wilbur were a wonderful couple who had a positive impact on each life that they touched.

They visited our son,Christopher, throughout his stay @Yale Hospital where he fought leukemia. He loved their visits and referred to them as his "special grandparents".

As my Mom aged, and needed support, it was Mary who so often reached out to her in her final years. Thank you Mary for being the wonderful person that you were.

We have been blessed to have had Mary in our lives. She had such a positive impact on all that she met...her family, her many friends, and her community. I will miss our talks now by telephone and her wonderful sense of humor. She was a dear friend.

Our love, thoughts, and prayers are with her family and all of those whose lives she touched through the years. We will all miss her terribly.
