Waterford - Norman E. Sylvia Sr., 82, of 75 Olive St., Waterford, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family.|
He was born Aug. 14, 1930, in New London, the son of Adolph E. and Irja (Maijala) Sylvia.
Norman was married to Jean Sylvia for over 50 years and was married at the United Methodist Church in New London by Rev. Belle. Mrs. Sylvia died on March 17, 2004.
Mr. Sylvia attended the former Chapman Technical School in New London, and then served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He worked for the Laborers Union Local 547 for over 50 years.
He enjoyed the outdoors, New York Yankees, and UConn sports. He was a member of the Waterford Holy Ghost Society.
He is survived by his children, Diane Meara of Uncasville, Norman Sylvia Jr. and his wife, Alison, of Waterford, Brenda Trask and her husband, Mark, of Waterford, Wayne Sylvia and his wife, Lynn, of Paulsboro, Wash., Vanessa Dunn and her husband, Daniel, of Uncasville, and Richard Sylvia of Waterford; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Lucille Edmonds of Waterford, Helen Metevier of Niantic, Wanda Nicholas of Old Saybrook, Barbara Lee of Connecticut, Carol Slotterbeck of Maryland.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a granddaughter, Felicia Bourgoin, and a sister, Diana Sylvia.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. Burial will follow in Jordan Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
