Groton - Gabriel Aquino, 87, of Groton, beloved husband of 61 years to Ramona, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, on Dec. 7, 2012, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.

He was born on April 1, 1925, in Bani, Pangasinan, in the Philippine Islands, the oldest son of the late Gregorio and Petra (Carsula) Aquino.
Gabriel enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 1, 1946, serving 23 years in the Naval Submarine Service on the Toro, Patrick Henry, Alexander Hamilton, and the Theodore Roosevelt. He moved into civil service for 17 years, retiring in 1987.
He was affectionately called "Dad" and "Pops" by his children, Gregory (Cathleen), Debra (Scott) Hurley, Marisa (Fred) Harvey, Gabriel, and Stephen (Maureen). His nine grandchildren called him "Pop Pop", Ericca (Scott), Gail, Paul, Stephen, Gregory, Chelsea, Tristan, Christopher, Alec; and a great-granddaughter, Riley Rose. Besides his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, he leaves behind nieces, Lynda Gleason and Lisa Villanova and a nephew, Lawrence Villanova.
Gabriel had a deep love and devotion to his family. He enjoyed preparing Sunday dinners where the family would all gather together creating lasting memories filled with laughter.
The family is grateful for the care provided by Dr. Milstein, Dr. Buggeln, Suzanne Smith, and the 5th floor staff at L&M Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Drive, Groton. Interment with military honors will be held in Starr Burying Ground. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St.
