Peter Francis Obituary

Mystic - Peter R. Francis Jr., 72, of Mystic, passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at his residence.

He was born on July 29, 1940, in Calais, Maine, the son of the late Peter R. and Isabelle (Stanley) Francis. For over 41 years, Peter had been employed as a welder at the Electric Boat Company in Groton, retiring in 2007. He was a world class structural welder who could boast of a welding record unparalleled in the shipyard. He maintained a 0% rejection rate for over 12 years, in an industry where any rate below 5% is considered good and 3.2% is average.

The good-natured compliment that was heard when he completed a welding job, "You can paint that one now" referred to a completed welding job, meaning no defects were found. A perfect record of 12 years certainly justified such praise. Peter's superior hand and eye coordination was evident in his favorite hobby as well, having won several trophies for shooting pool. In addition, he travelled to Maine every August to go salt water fishing. Peter was also a full blooded Passamaquoddy Indian originating from Maine. Hence, his love of the state.

His survivors include two sons, Peter Francis III of Groton, and Christopher Francis of East Haven; his grandchildren, Danielle Francis of Florida, Evan C. Francis of New Haven; his partner, Cheryl Adamec of Mystic; his cousin, Linda Stanley; and his special niece, Glenda Alaniz.

Besides his parents, he had also been predeceased by four sisters; and a brother.

Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 31 Thames St.. Groton, is assisting his family with the arrangements, which are to be private.

Donations in his memory may be directed to Hospice Southeastern Connecticut, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360.

To uncle Pete.......even though you were my cousin l always gave you the title uncle and you loved it as I loved you. I will forever remember the long talks we use to have....
You reminded me so much of your mom Isabel. I use to spend a lot time with her when I was carrying my daughter. You also taught me to play pool.....boy could you play. We would run the table when we were together and nobody could touch us. I loved those times with you uncle. Now you are with your dad mom sister's and my grandpa and grandma your uncle and aunt. Give them all a big kiss for me. Til we meet again uncle Pete

Pete was a good friend and one of the first people from home that i met when i started at E.B. We were friends for my 32 years there and he was still there and the best welder when i retired.I joined him many times on the breakwater in Eastport, Me in August for some great Mackerel fishing. He will be missed. R.I.P. My friend.

During my years in the Steel Trades at Electric Boat, Peter was considered by management to be the most skilled x-ray welder. He was often relied upon by management to complete those final critical welds needed to deliver a submarine. His repeated ability to complete these critical welds (often in very difficult situations) was truly amazing. He was a great man and I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing.

I can attest to the welding expertise of Pete, many times in production meetings he was asked for by name by ship management for key jobs where repairs would hold up ship's schedules.
He was a quiet man, did his job to the best of his ability. Condolences to the Francis family, he was a good man.
