New London - Today we announce the peaceful passing of James Hart Derby, 78, of Masons Island, Mystic on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013.|
James was born Nov. 27, 1934, in Hempstead, N.Y., to Catherine and James Hart. He grew up on a farm in Peru, N.Y. before graduating from Union College and McGill Medical School. James was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Berlin Crisis in 1961 and spent two years in Ankara, Turkey, followed by four years at Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D. C. completing his orthopedic residency. He then served a year in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and other commendations.
He settled with his family on Masons Island in 1970 and practiced many years as an orthopedic surgeon in New London. He loved sailing, skiing, cooking and most of all traveling with his family and friends.
James is survived by his sister, Virginia Hahn of Arizona; and his two sons, Michael Derby of Boulder, Colo. and Scott Derby of Darien; and grandchildren, Evan, Timothy and Nicholas.
James was predeceased by his dear friend and traveling companion, Elizabeth Moore.
A memorial service to celebrate James' life is planned for June. Details will be announced at a later date.
