Montville - William J. Wright Jr., 88, of Uncasville, entered eternal life on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, in the comfort of his loving family.|
He was born May 16, 1925, in Lincoln, R.I., the son of the late James and Henrietta Wright Sr. He graduated from Cumberland High School with his high school sweetheart, Mary, in 1943. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and served on LST 461 in the Pacific Theater. He made initial landings on Saipan, Tinian, Leyte, and Luzon in the Philippines and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged on May 1, 1946.
He was united in marriage to the former Mary Sharp on March 14, 1947, in Primitive Methodist Church in Cumberland, R.I., Mrs. Wright survives him. Mr. Wright worked in the wholesale bakery business for 44 years, holding management positions with the former Ward Baking Co. in New London, The Reymond Baking Co. in Waterbury, and retiring from Stroehmann Bakeries as a key account manager in 1990.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW and St. Johns Masonic Lodge #1 in Providence, R.I.
Besides his beloved wife of over 66 years, he is survived by a daughter and son in-law, Sharon and Jim Gagnon of Uncasville; two grandchildren, Bonnie Gagnon of Uncasville and Daniel Gagnon of Mystic; a twin sister, Henrietta Rodgers of Rhode Island; and two great-grandchildren, Drew and Delaney Gagnon.
He was predeceased by a son, William B. Wright; and three brothers.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. His family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service. Interment is private.
