Arthur Ferrari Obituary

Mystic - Arthur Charles Ferrari, 70, of Mystic, husband of 46 years to Alida Ferrari, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, after battling Parkinson's disease.

Born in Coral Gables, Fla., he was the son of the late Albert and Edith Ferrari and lived in Mystic for the past nine years, previously residing in New London.

Art was a Professor Emeritus of sociology with Connecticut College from 1970 to 2010 and served as Dean of the college from 1994 to 1999. Art received his bachelor of arts degree from SUNY, Albany, his M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Yale, and his M.S.W. from the University of Connecticut School of Social Work.

He was the founding director of the college's High School Student Advancement Program, which sought to increase the diversity of college applicants, for which he received numerous awards and grants. He served as chair of the sociology department and as a member of the Faculty Steering and Conference Committee.

His public-spirited efforts expanded beyond the college as well. Art was the co-facilitator of a forum that formulated a plan to increase educational quality and diversity in a region covering 26 Connecticut towns and school districts. He directed the United Way's Community Needs Assessments of 1993 and 1994, served two terms as a member of its board of directors, and served on the Board of Fellows of the Lyman Allyn Art Museum.

In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Adam Ferrari of Bethesda, Md.; sister, Paula Walter and her husband, Steve, of Glenn Dale, Md.; three sisters-in-law, Mary Feeney and her husband, Jay Di Pucchio, Terry Feeney and Joanne Christopher and her husband, Kevin; two brothers-in-law, Thomas Feeney and his wife, Carol, and Paul Feeney; and a cousin, Diane Hlavaty and her husband, Bob; many loving nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Francesca Feeney.

A private service will be held for immediate family. A memorial service celebrating his life will be arranged for a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's research.

I'm having a hard time believing it's been five years since you left us. Losing you has been one of the most painful experiences of my life, though I try to remember that at least now, you are free of the disease that took you from us. I wish you an incredible journey through the cosmos until the rest of us can join you!
