Carl Larson Obituary

Lebanon, N.H. - Carl O. Larson Jr., 81, died on Oct. 2, 2015.

He was born March 17, 1934, in Lynn, Mass., to Carl Oscar and Esther (Nygren) Larson and grew up in Swampscott, Mass. Carl graduated from Yale University in 1956, with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, followed by a master's degree in mechanical engineering from University of Connecticut in 1962. His long career at Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in Groton, culminated with his serving as director of nuclear engineering.

After raising three children in their Stonington home, Carl and his wife, Jane Larson, retired to Lyme, N.H., where they also raised their grandson, Erik Larson.

Jane passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in 2000.

In 2002, Carl married Evva Meyer Larson, a longtime acquaintance of Noank, and they lived in Lyme before downsizing to Lebanon, N.H., in 2010.

Carl was very involved in community affairs in Lyme and the Upper Valley of New Hampshire. He was a member of Lyme's Those Guys, and Lyme's Budget Committee, was trustee of the trust funds in Lyme for several terms, and treasurer of the Upper Valley Ship Modelers Guild, to name a few.

Carl was a devoted husband and father, and he strongly valued education. While at Electric Boat, he facilitated an engineering mentoring program between professional engineers and community youth through the Thames Science Center, New London.

During retirement, he became deeply involved with Osher Institute of Lifelong Education at Dartmouth College, enrolling in several classes every term and serving as the organization's president from 2007-2009.

Carl is survived by his wife, Evva; his children, David Larson, Scott Larson, and Amy Rhodes; grandchildren, Melanie Robinson, Erik Larson, Sylvia Rhodes, and Linnea Rhodes; two sisters, June Beckwith and Carol Dyer; a brother, Richard Larson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Edith Breed and Ethyl Kolesar.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, at the Lyme Congregational Church, 1 Dorchester Road, Lyme, N.H.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make contributions to The Memorial Fund, Osher Institute of Lifelong Learning at Dartmouth College, 7 Lebanon St., Suite 107, Hanover, NH 03755-2112.

My thoughts are wth you, dearest Evva, and all the family. He was a truly dedicated father and grandfather and I was impressed how he used his retirement in unselfish ways. You made a very special couple who both traveled and gave of yourself to others. A wise and dedicated marriage of two extraordinary people. ...

I remember Carl with a lot of admiration, respect and friendship. I worked under him at Electric Boat for many years, but we also played golf together as well as bridge and hearts on occasion. Sometimes golf and hearts mixed together as Carl always initiated a hearts game at the annual EBAC golf banquet - it was always a highlight of the year. And Carl was the only person to ever hit me in the head with a driver! It was an accident as I was behind him when he took a practice backswing - but it really made an impression.

A truly great man and one I'm proud to call my friend, leader and mentor.
