David Bowie

David Bowie, the legendary British singer and boundary-breaking musician also known as Ziggy Stardust, has died, according to The Associated Press. He was 69.

Bowie died Sunday. The cause was cancer, the AP reported.

Tributes to the singer poured out via social media early Monday.

Iggy Pop, the singer and frontman for the seminal band the Stooges, who lived and recorded with Bowie in Germany around the time Bowie recorded his album “Heroes,” said, "David's friendship was the light of my life. I never met such a brilliant person. He was the best there is."

Born David Robert Jones Jan. 8, 1947, in London, England, he demonstrated a musical talent early in his life. In 1969, he released the first of many hit songs that he would see in his lifetime. “Space Oddity” vaulted to No. 5 on the British singles chart. Years later, the singer adopted an androgynous look with his alter ego Ziggy Stardust, recording with his backup band the Spiders From Mars. Bowie’s first No. 1 single in the U.S. was 1975’s “Fame,” a cut from his hit album “Young Americans.”

He collaborated not only with Iggy Pop, but also Brian Eno, with whom he released three critically acclaimed albums: “Low,” “Heroes” and “Lodger.” He cut “Under Pressure,” a 1981 hit, with Freddie Mercury and Queen.

Bowie, who also was a successful actor, was still making music at the time of his death. Two days before his death, on his birthday, Bowie released a new album, "Blackstar."

He is survived by his son, Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones, by his first wife, the actress and model Mary Angela "Angie" Barnett; his second wife, the Somali-born U.S. supermodel Iman; and their daughter, Alexandria "Lexi" Zahra Jones.
