Harold Lamphere Obituary

Norwich - Harold Henry "Chief" Lamphere Jr., 88, lifetime resident of Norwich, son of Bessie G. (Edwards) and Harold H. Lamphere Sr., passed away peacefully, on his birthday, Aug. 19, 2016.

Harold grew up in Norwich and graduated from Norwich Free Academy. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy where he served in World War II as a radar man. Upon completion of his service, he joined the Norwich Fire Department where he provided leadership for nearly 40 years as chief during some of the most historical fires in the city's history.

On June 24, 1950, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Burns, who predeceased him in 1997. Their three children, Gilbert (Sarah) Lamphere of Stonington, Paula D'Ambrisi (Dave Caron) of Elizabethtown, N.Y. and Mark Lamphere of Norwich, all survive him.

Chief is also survived by his sister, Norma Borum of Norwich; five grandchildren, Daniel O'Brien of Preston, Kristen Rose of Oakdale, Matthew O'Brien of Washington, Meghan Horan of Mystic and Rebecca Brock of Stonington. He was blessed to have six great-grandchildren, Kylie O'Brien, Katelin Rose, Neo and Len O'Brien, and Avery and Jordan Horan, all of whom loved him and his never-ending candy stash.

In addition to his wife, Harold was predeceased by his siblings, Dorothy Chapman Sharon Garnier, and his grandson, Cody Brock.

Chief's love for his family, the brothers and sisters of the fire department, the New York Yankees and New York football Giants will live on. Whenever he would hear the sirens go off and the trucks drive out, he would say, "God be with them."

God be with you, Dad, Harold, Gramp, Chief. We'll take it from here.

Family and friends will gather from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22, 2016 at Cummings Gagne Funeral Home, 82 Cliff St., Norwich. His funeral will assemble at 9 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 181 Elizabeth St., Norwich. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the IAFF Local 892 MDA Fund, 10 N. Thames St., Norwich, CT 06360. For memorial guestbook, visit www.Cummings-Gagne FH.com.
