Steven Bruce Robbins, a resident of La Quinta, California, passed away on September 27, 2012, after a battle with leukemia. He was surrounded by friends and family when he died at The City of Hope in Duarte. The long-time La Quinta resident had been a patient at the world-renowned cancer treatment center, preparing for a bone marrow transplant. He was 59. Steve was born to Verill and Esther Robbins on March 28, 1953, in Port Hueneme, California. He married Karen Buresh on October 26, 1985, in Palm Desert, California. He was an engineering graduate of UCLA
and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Steve's employment with the Coachella Valley Water District totaled 25 years in a career that included a break of several years from public service when he ventured into the private sector. As the general manager-chief engineer for nearly a decade, he was only the third person since 1956 to serve as CVWD's chief administrator. Steve's guidance led CVWD through difficult economic times without layoffs, furloughs or salary cuts, also keeping rate hikes to a minimum. He was well respected and loved by his employees. His dedicated community involvement included service as a La Quinta Planning Commissioner, past president and member of the La Quinta chapter of Rotary International
, and membership in the Building Industry Association. His contributions in La Quinta were recognized by the City when he was named as the first 'Pillar of the Community', a prestigious honor. Steve loved to play and collect guitars and dedicated a room in his home to his music. He was a member of a local rock quartet, Aqueduct Pocket. He also loved to spend time with family and friends on his boat at Lake Havasu, and took every opportunity to go deep sea fishing, especially with his daughter, Kirklyn. Much of his free time was spent in his back yard where he hosted many gatherings with his "extended" family BBQ'ing and watching all the kids enjoying themselves in his pool. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 26 years, Karen, his daughters Ashley Robbins, Kristyn Hunter and Kirklyn Robbins, son-in-law Corry Hunter, grandsons Rhys Tanner Robbins and Brock Steven Hunter, his brother Craig Robbins, his parents Bob and Esther Robbins and many cousins, nieces and nephews and his many close friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2012, at 5pm at the Palm Springs Air Museum. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to either City of Hope Development Center, 1055 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, California 90017 or to Steve's grandsons' college fund.
