Carl Herkimer Obituary

Dr. Carl Payson Herkimer, M.D., passed away suddenly on December 7, 2010, leaving behind loving family and friends. Dr. Herkimer was born to Hazen and Mildred (Steinke) Herkimer on May 14, 1934, in Monroe, Mich. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1952, University of Michigan in 1955, and University of Michigan Medical School in 1960. He completed his Internship and Residency in Orthopedics at St. Vincent's Hospital and Maumee Valley Hospital, Toledo, Ohio. Carl served as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1967 and as an Orthopedic Surgeon for the 8th Naval District, Corpus Christi, Texas. Dr. Herkimer joined the orthopedic practice of Drs. Pollex and Peoples in Toledo, Ohio in 1967. The group moved their offices to Talmadge Road and changed their name to Westside Orthopedic Group. In 1985 they moved to Monclova Road where they provided exclusive orthopedic service to St. Luke's Hospital. Dr. Herkimer served on the St. Luke's medical staff from 1967 to present. He served on the Board of Trustees from 1980-1996; served as Chief of Staff from 1982 to 1984; and received the prestigious Clair F. Martig Award in 1998, "given annually to an individual who has substantially contributed to the growth and prosperity of St. Luke's Hospital." Carl retired from surgery in 1999, but continued treating patients on a part time basis at the Westside Orthopedic office in Maumee, Ohio. He divided his time between Toledo and Rancho Mirage, Calif. Carl was an active member of Sunrise Country Club where he served as President of the Country Club Board of Directors from 2004-2005 and President of the Sunrise HOA Board from 2008-present. He enjoyed tennis, being an avid player since high school, and tolerated golf because he could play with friends. He reveled in his family and doted on his grandchildren. Carl is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Diana; four children, Kimberly Kaczmarek of Tiffin, Ohio, Carl Herkimer II of Toledo, Ohio, Craig (Taryn) of Palm Desert, Calif., Cristy (Patrick) Kec of Chandler, Ariz.; five granddaughters, Jodi, Kelly, Carla, Lauren, and Courtney; two great-granddaughters, Madison and Olivia; and one great-grandson, Zayden. Carl will be dearly missed by his many friends, associates, and colleagues. He was an energetic, helpful, loving and involved man who was always willing to serve others. A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Sunrise Country Club, 71601 Country Club Drive, Rancho Mirage, CA. Dear family of Dr. Herkimer,
Dr. Herkimer saved my fathers leg from being amputated after a severe auto accident. It is because of Dr. Herkimer that my father was able to go out to his backyard 1/2 court basketbal court and shoot a jumpshot once again. Thank you for being his compassionate, intelligent experienced doctor..Jerry Kasper's daughter

Dear Diana and Family,
As your "sometime" neighbor in LM, I will miss Carl on every trip I take out to the desert. he was just so engaging, a great story teller and an entertaining character if ever there was one. For me, not having him as my neighbor and friend is a great loss. I will miss him along with all of you.

so long "Herk"and may God speed. I was an MHS classmate of Carl's two years behind him. He graduated with my sister Sara and they were great friends. Carl treated me in Toledo for knee problems. I always respected him as it seemed nothing ever bothered him. He was a class person in high school and friends with everyone. I send my condolences to his family, colleagues and friends. We have lost a truly fine individual. Winston Scheer

I was so saddened by the news of Dr. Herkimer's passing. We first met in the 70's when he set my then 16yr.old daughter's ankle. Just around August of last year, as he covered for Dr. Ben, he did the follow up on my knee replacement. We laughed about me asking if it was all right for me to tan before the scar was healed, and he sporting his wonderful tan, jokingly said, "you know tanning isn't good for you". What a great personality. He will be soooooo missed.

Dianna and Family: I had the privilege of working with Dr.Herkimer off and on for years. He not only had a great sense of humor, but was so kind and caring. If anyone had a problem, whether it was medical, personal, or financial, he was always willing to discuss it. A true mentor to so many. He will be greatly missed, but always remembered. He truly was a man of integrity. May God help all of you through this time of sadness.

Diana and family: My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. Dr. Herkimer was a wonderful man with a kind heart with a passion for helping others. It was a pleasure to have known him and an honor to have had 10 years to work with him, he was just "one of the girls!" He will be missed dearly by many.

My fondest memory of Carl is him calmly reading the newspaper in his daughter's hospital room after lovely grand-daughter, Lauren, was born. Son-in-law Patrick was trying to wrangle up a pizza for Cristy, who was talking a mile a minute with me and Diana... Proud Papa just was THERE, in the midst of all that chaos -- a rock of calm in the storm. God bless you, Carl, as you were a blessing to us!

In 1973 Dr. Carl Herkimer refused to sentence a 7 year old girl to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. He got special permission for me to be placed in a study he was working on to repair the legs of adults with bone transplant. Because of Dr. Herkimer my left leg was not amputated. I have run, danced and jumped and I have a wonderful family. I learned from Dr. Herkimer to never except--"we've never tried that before" as a final answer. Words could not express gratitude enough for the kindness he showed me and the impact he made on my life. He was a medical geniuos and more than that a kind and gentle man. I am sure the impact of his loss will be felt greatly by many.
Sincerely,

Connie L. (Wolf) Wallace
