Don Davis Obituary

Don P. Davis, Jr. was born January 6, 1935, to Don P. and Margaret L. Davis. He passed away on September 8, 2010, of cardiac amyloidosis. He is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Ann; son Mike (Norma) of La Quinta; son Bill (Barbara) of Mercer Island; daughter Dyan Williams (Steve) of Australia, and seven grandchildren. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1957 with a BA in Business Administration. He was very active in his fraternity, Phi Delta Theta, serving as president his senior year. He served two years in the U. S. Army as a First Lieutenant. He was a competitive badminton player and won the National Junior Championships in 1957 in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. In the U. S. Don was ranked between #3 and #9 in men's singles for 10 years and was a member of the Thomas Cup Team, the equivalent of the Davis Cup in tennis, and competed overseas. He then went on to become an accomplished tennis player, which he enjoyed his entire life. Professionally, Don was an insurance broker. He began his career with Aetna in 1960, joined Dawson and Co. in 1965, a Northwest insurance brokerage firm later sold to the national firm of Corroon and Black in 1977. He later became President and CEO of the Northwest Division. In 1989 he joined Highland Capital and continued to work in the life insurance business until 2009. In Palm Desert, where he and his wife Ann spent their winters, Don served on the board and was the current president of Silver Sands Homeowners Association. He volunteered at Martha's Village every Wednesday for the past ten years. In Seattle he helped start Community Homes, an organization serving people with developmental disabilities, and was on their board for 10 years, four years as president. He was a member of the Seattle Tennis Club for more than 50 years, serving as tennis captain for two years, board member for six years, and president for two years. Don was also the managing member of the Sammamish Club, LLC, in Issaquah. Don was an active Christian and member of First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue. When in the Desert, he and Ann faithfully attended and supported Southwest Community Church. He was a board member and past president of Teleios, a men's Bible study and fellowship organization, meeting weekly with his small group for over 30 years, including a "snowbird" group in Palm Desert. Don strongly believed Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior and everything we have He has given us. A celebration service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at 2:00 pm.

I am still reminded fondly of Dan Davis. Many I have known have passed since his passing. I remember him saying, when you get to a certain age, there are funerals to go to every week! I hold in my heart, his integrity, his kindness, and his willingness to help. I send love to his family, friends, and loved ones.

I was so saddened to hear about Don's passing. I worked as Don's assistant at R.E. Lee from 1990-1997. I'm sure he has no idea what an impact he had on my life. I had so much respect for the ethics, character and humanity that he brought to his work. I have thought of Don often over the years as I have undertaken different challenges in work and life. He was a fine example of a human being and I will never forget him.
