Ernest Lara Nieto of Indio, California passed into our Lords' Kingdom on July 4, 2013. Ernie who was 78 years old, was born in Wasco, California. He attended schools in the Coachella Valley including Coachella Valley Union High School. He enlisted into the Army in March of 1953, after completing basic training at Fort Bragg he was sent to Germany where he entered the 10th Special Forces Group Airborne and became a member of the Green Berets. He married Hermine Josefa Walleitner on May 26, 1956 in Bad Tolz, Germany; they had a son Stephen and returned to the United States in February of 1957 and then had their second son Herman. He worked for various companies in the Coachella Valley prior to working for James E. Wright Pump and Well Drilling and Cavanaugh Electric. Ernie was an honorable hardworking man who was well known and loved by many here in the valley. He was a member of the Coachella Valley Airborne Association, he could always be found in the Airborne tamale booth at the Indio Tamale Festival until his health began to fail. He was recently honored with a Lifetime Membership and recognized as a Founding Member of the Airborne Association. After retiring in 1996 Ernie enjoyed painting, playing chess and attending his grandchildren's activities. He never missed an award ceremony, recital, and baseball or football game. He looked after his sisters and made miscellaneous repairs to everyone's homes as needed. He loved his family more than anything else and he was crazy in love with his German bride. He is survived by his spouse Hermine Nieto of Indio and his two sons Stephen Nieto and Herman Nieto, both of La Quinta, California. His is survived by his siblings Maria Hutcheson of La Quinta, Rego Nieto of Indio and Ruben Nieto of Tucson, Arizona. Ernie is survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Andres and Juanita Nieto both who migrated to California from Chihuahua Mexico in 1916. He was preceded in death by his sisters Donna Tribolet, of Tucson, Arizona, Lucy Barrios of Montebello, Annie Garcia of Indio and Gloria Nieto of Indio. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Ray Nieto, Richard Nieto and William Nieto, all of Indio, California. Visitation and Rosary services to be held on Monday, July 15, 2013 and will begin at 8:30AM in the chapel at Saint Francis of Assisi which is located at 47225 Washington Street, La Quinta, California. The funeral mass will follow in the main sanctuary at 10:00AM, the funeral procession will proceed directly after to the Coachella Valley Cemetery which is located at 82-925 Ave. 52 in Coachella, Calif. Fitzhenry-Wiefels of Indio is in charge of the funeral arrangements. A reception celebrating his life will be held at approximately 12:15PM to 4:00PM in the Terra Lago Club House located at 42-900 Lago Vista Blvd., Indio, California.
