Gretchen Clarke Obituary

Long time desert resident and Hawaiian fashion designer and retailer, Gretchen Clarke passed away Saturday January 22, 2011 at Eisenhower Medical Center. Gretchen Mary Clarke beloved wife of Hawaiian fashion pioneer, Waltah Clarke, moved to Palm Springs in 1952 opening their second store at the landmark El Mirador Hotel. She is survived by her six children, Walter Clarke Jr. of Honolulu, Hawaii, Heather Salsbury of Los Angeles, Rolf Clarke of Tennessee, Gretchen Clarke Jr. of Montana, Cameron Clarke of Ranch Mirage, and Cissy Clarke Milauskas of Los Angeles. Mrs. Clarke was well known and respected in the community for her charitable work including the founding of Tiempo de Los Ninos, the Desert Hospital auxiliary that raised money for the hospital. In addition Mrs. Clarke served multiple terms as president of Desert Circus, raising money for local charities. More recently, Mrs. Clarke was a member of Dusty Wings, a retired flight attendant organization which fundraises for Guide Dogs of the Desert and the Delta Gamma Sorority providing help for the blind. Together the Clarkes opened the nationwide chain of Waltah Clarke's Hawaiian Shops which were fixtures in the desert for nearly 40 years. As pioneers the Clarkes singled-handedly popularized Hawaiian fashion on the mainland. She was innovative in her fashion design exemplified by the launch of the mini muumuu in the sixties, resortware and matching His and Hers Hawaiian apparel. Mrs. Clarke was well respected, admired and honored for her work in the Desert. Though born in Chicago and graduating from Northwestern University, she met Waltah during hula lessons at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki in 1951. After a short stint with American Airlines, Mrs. Clarke moved to the Desert where she demonstrated an unparalleled joi de vivre well known by desert residents. Her children and friends will always admire her vibrant personality which fueled her fortitude, business acumen, zest for life and extraordinary ability to accomplish all of her goals and dreams. Services will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, January 28, 2011 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Cathedral City, (800) 204 3131. Reception to follow at Lake Mirage, Rancho Mirage.

Gretchen was a special lady. She adored Waltah and her children. She had a special "spark" that never dimmed. I had the pleasure of working for the Clarke's and Meeka and always marveled at how "in love" the Clarke's were. What began as a working relationship, turned into a memorable friendship that I will treasure. Aloha Gee Cee...May you rest in peace with your beloved.

Please convey my prayers to the family of Gretchen Klaus Clarke. She was a happy, outgoing person and everyone loved her. I was a sorority sister of hers at NU and kept in contact with her for years. She always sent me beautiful Christmas cards with the whole family pictured. I saved them for years and thought of her. She and I met in 1973 at a Delta Gamma convention and she and I met again in about 1979 in Palm Desert...she came and played tennis and visited my hosts. I would like to send a gift in her honor to her favorite charity. Please let me know if one is preferred.

DEAREST GRETCHEN, WHEN I FIRST JOINED DUSTY WINGS, AND FOUND AN EMPTY SEAT, YOU WERE THERE, SAYING TO SIT DOWN, WELCOME, AND YOU BOUGHT ME A GLASS OF WINE !! I DIDN'T KNOW ANYONE EXCEPT JILL STANGER, WHO BROUGHT ME AS HER GUEST. FROM THEN ON, IF I GOT THERE FIRST, I WOULD SAVE YOU A SEAT AND VICE VERSUS. I SO ENJOYED YOUR COMPANY, AND HEARING ABOUT YOUR FAMILY, YOUR LIFE AND YOUR FLYING DAYS!! THE LAST LUNCH OF THE SEASON THAT I ATTENDED LAST SPRING, YOU WERE USING A WALKER, BUT STILL FULL OF LIFE AND ENERGY. WHEN I WALKED OUT WITH YOU TO YOUR DRIVER, I DIDN'T KNOW THAT WAS THE LAST TIME I WOULD SEE YOU. I KNOW I HUGGED YOU TIGHT, AND SAID "I'LL SEE YOU NEXT SEASON"
I'M SO SORRY I DIDN'T KNOW YOU BECAME SO ILL.
FAREWELL, SWEET LADY, SAVE ME A SEAT.

So many memories of your parents and you all as children. Gretchen and I saw each other often during the last few years and shared many stories of the past. She lived a full life and did so miss your dad. I am sure they are reunited forever and will watch over you. They both loved all of you so much. All of us will miss her each in their own way but remember the good times. Rest in peace my friend. Bernie Siva

Waltah and Gretchen were wonderful people and friends. One of my fondest memories was Waltah telling me how lucky we were to each have beautiful red headed wives. Gretchen was a very special woman who will be greatly missed.
