Helen Slayton Obituary

Helen Louise Slayton, 94 years of age, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010 in Pam Desert, Calif. She was born in Carson, Iowa October 24, 1916 to Irel and Edith Wilkinson. After graduation from High School, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa working in the state capitol as a statistician in the "Old Age Division". She married her high school sweetheart "Bud" Leonard Slayton on August 16, 1936 in Hamburg, Iowa. They moved to California in 1938; over the years living in Los Angeles, Baldwin Park, Oxnard, Fontana, and then moving to Palm Desert in 1962. Helen and Bud enjoyed 66 years of marriage until his passing in 2002. During Helen's working career outside the home, she was a secretary for a variety of companies. The real joy in her life were her daughters, Sharon Wilcox, Cindy Holleman, granddaughter Hayden Holleman and son-in-law Joe Wilcox. During her active life, Helen was President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Scholarship Chairperson for the Women's Club of the Desert, Member of PEO chapter RD; Member of Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church; Honorary Member of Palm Desert Golfing niners. She played golf until she was 85 years young. Her greatest passion she found in the game of bridge; where she developed great and lasting friendships. For those who will read this, we want you to know that our mother was the most giving, unselfish lady; She thought of others before herself with great generosity. With an abundance of Love, We send her to the next life with her favorite box of Sees candy. Her family profoundly gives thanks to her Hospice caregivers, Cheryl, Elaine, Kelly, and Will Gavin, and The Odessey House staff. We also wish to thank the Maranatha Board and Care Facility, Sedona House. The caregivers, Aiesha, Desiree, Yolanda, Lynn and Maggie have provided a caring environment for Helen these past 5 months. There will be a celebration of her life at Forest Lawn Mortuary, Ramon Rd. and DaVall, on Monday December 13 at 11:30am. Internment will be at Fairhaven Memorial Park, Santa Ana Calif. on Saturday December 18 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, just remember Helen when you eat a piece of chocolate.
