Herbert Rafetto Obituary

Herbert C. Rafetto III, 58, passed away suddenly on September 9, 2010. A 16-year resident of Palm Springs, he was known extensively throughout the community, and his passing was a shock to us all. Herb was born July 25, 1952 in Lowell, Mass., the son of Herbert C. Jr. and Jean E. Rafetto. A 1970 graduate of Kittanning Senior High School, he received his BS from the University of Denver in Hotel Restaurant Management in 1974. Herb then went on to a 25-year career for the Hyatt Hotel Organization, culminating in General Manager positions at both the Hyatt Hotel in Carmel, and our own Hyatt Hotel in downtown Palm Springs. During that time, Herb built relationships that have lasted through the years. He was President of the Palm Springs Tourism Board from 1992-1995 and a board member of the Chamber of Commerce (1992-1996). As a leader in the Hotel Industry he frequently spoke at City Council meetings representing the Palm Springs Hospitality Industry. Whether a room attendant, City Council Member, or a General Manager, it was easy to appreciate and remember Herb's easy manner and charm, and the warm attention he paid to the people in his life. After his career in Hotel Management, Herb applied his talents to Retail Management, leading two upscale clothing outlets to record sales; and then he focused on vacation sales, where he was awarded four top sales honors. Just a few years ago he was lucky enough to meet Susan, and for the last nine years she made him perhaps as happy as he had ever been. No one knows better than she the passion Herb always held for music. Although he had a wide range of taste, he was, in his heart, an avid Dead Head and had an encyclopedic knowledge of the Grateful Dead's music. Any visit to his home included personal sing-a-longs to their greatest hits. Finally, though, his dream was to perform; and he set out on that journey with a banjo, a good friend, Dan Regeimbal. His dream came true when they performed at a major hotel weeks before his death, and once again around a campfire with friends the night before he left us. For him, if he had to leave, the timing couldn't have been better, for those of us who knew and loved him, there could never be a good time for him to leave. He will be missed immensely. Knowing Herb, though, he is probably somewhere playing his banjo with Jerry Garcia, sipping on a single-malt, and laughing-it's certain that he is laughing. Herbert C. Rafetto III is survived by his wife, Susan; his daughter, Natalie, whom he loved dearly; his step-son, Brandon; his parents; his sisters, Sue Morgan, Marti Kubatko, and Judy Jack; numerous nieces and nephews; his friends too numerous to mention; and his dog, Jerry. A memorial gathering will be held in October with close friends where, according to his wishes, they can all tell funny stories about Herb. "Ramble on Herbie, settle down easy"

Yesterday I posted this picture of my grand daughter Natalie Rose, She is the drummer for the San Francisco Rock Band "Melvoy", and was the light of Herb's life.
Sometimes when I think of her and what she has accomplished, I remember Herb's love to "Kick Out The Jams", and I can only imagine how proud he would be of her, and how excited he would be at seeing her in concert.

We miss you Herbie and the "beat" you started those 23 years ago "does go on".

Thinking about tomorrow and the first anniversary of Herb's passing, I spent some time this evening reminiscing and browsing the comments in this Guest Book. Herb was a friend to me as he was to so many others, and my thoughts about his life, his extraordinary character and the times we spent together will be with me forever.

Herb was the father of my Grandchild Natalie Rose, and should anyone ever wonder what happened to his "nutty" sense of humor, his gracious generosity or his passion for life . . . they need only to look in her direction.

Hello everyone, I add my condolences to Herb’s family. I worked under Herb at the Hyatt Islandia in 1989, He was very helpful in my carrier and let me add, when it came to charisma, charm and Business knowledge, he could have been the president of the free world. I learned of his death today as I was seeking to contact him to say hello. Herb was a great person to work for and to hang out with. In death as in Life he lives strong within me and I’m sure others.

To Herbs Family:

I was friends with Herb many years ago at the Hyatt in Dallas. I still have a pan he gave me to make my famous (sorta famous) eggplant recipe. We all had a blast Kerry Grub, Terri Theil, Sandy S., John Arnett, Johnny Mays, Diana and John Cottrel, Darla and John Ures and so many more childhood friends (we were kids)....we had so much fun ....your dearest Herb was the nicest person....he was funny, nice, silly, smart, hard-working really a good man. I am so very sorry for your loss as I know he will be missed. What may I say that you already do not know....one of the most caring people with a love for life...I was telling my husband how much everyone liked Herb and I am so sad for his wife and daughter. The sky at night has a bright light shining and that would be Herb making everyone laugh and smile! God Bless Herb's family and know he will be watching over you! Sandy Storey-Moon

I am saddened to hear of Herb's passing. I was, for a brief time, his brother-in-law in the eighties. We had lots of fun cooking dinner for his wife's (my wife's sister) family in Dallas. He was a great guy, lots of fun to spend time with. We stayed in touch for many years. Herb was smart as hell and had a great sense of humor. We hadn't spoken in a few years and, damn, I wish we had. He will be missed by many. My condolences to his family.
I would like to hear from anybody who could tell me what he had been up to the past few years, etc. The last time I talked to him, he was managing a clothing store.
A terrible loss.

Herb Rafetto was an inspiration to all of those who came to know him. He was also the father of my only grandchild, my granddaughter Natalie Rose Rafetto. And for this gift of precious life he so lovingly created, I am blessed and forever grateful.

Talking with those who knew him well, and reading the comments from those whose lives he touched, I am moved by the consistent similarity in the description of his character and the attributes that made him such a special friend.

Herb has left our physical world, but his attributes that we talk about, and which are so perfectly expressed by Debra Curby in this Guest Book, will remain for another generation in the person of his beautiful daughter Natalie. For she too is "kind, gracious, charismatic, generous and funnier than heck !!"

Thank you Herb. . . Your legacy lives on . . .

Herb you were a free spirit whose flame was extinguished too quickly. We had a lot of great times together over the last 33 years; we raised a lot hell & were involved in much mischief. We love you & are going to miss your friendship, laughter & your love of life. Hopefully you did not suffer, may you rest in peace & your family be comforted during this time of grief. We are happy that we were able to see you with your band at the Hyatt. You looked so happy and the night was magical. Good bye my friend, I will never forget you. I Can't believe I won't see you again. I Can't believe I won't see you, my friend. You would laugh at it all in the end.

Where do I begin? Herb taught me so much in the years I worked for him. He could be tough, but only because he wanted me to be the best I could be. It was a pleasure to work for him and it was an honor to be his friend. I was truly flattered that he kept in touch with me years after he had moved on to other endeavors. He was always so kind, gracious, charismatic, generous and funnier than heck! Herb lived life to the fullest. Good for him!
