Iris Marie Jessup Montgomery, beloved wife of James Montgomery, mother of Anne Montgomery, and grandmother of Ian Montgomery Nordstrom, passed away August 31, 2013. Iris Marie Jessup was born July 18, 1925 in Carthage, Indiana, the second of twelve children of Catherine and Lowell Jessup. She grew up on a farm, performing many farm chores. She graduated from Knightstown high school. She moved to Santa Barbara, California, to work during World War II. She became a legal secretary, and moved back to Indiana where she met her husband when she hired him to work at Insley Manufacturing. She resigned from Insley and moved back to Santa Barbara, but Jim traveled to see her, brought her back to Indianapolis, and they married on May 16, 1954. They moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where their daughter was born, then to St. Paul, Minnesota, where Iris devoted herself full time to raising Anne and managing their household. They moved to Seattle, Washington, in 1979. They went to Rancho Mirage, California, seasonally beginning in 1991 and moved there full time in 2001. Iris was very active in the women's golf association at Rancho Las Palmas and played right up until her passing. She received an award as the "Golden Girl" for her continued play well into her eighties. She had two holes-in-one, the second in her mid 80's. She was one of the best putters and the ladies all wanted her on their team for putting contests. She also was a fabulous bridge player, coordinating groups and giving lessons. She took it upon herself to welcome all new members and be sure they felt included. Friends appreciated her bright personality and loving attitude. Iris is preceded in death by her parents Catherine and Lowell Jessup, and her siblings Martha Smalley, Betty Young, Robert Jessup, Ruth Davisson, and Dorothy Riggs. She is survived by husband James Montgomery, daughter Anne Montgomery and son-in-law Glen Stream, grandson Ian Montgomery Nordstrom, step-grandson Graham Stream, siblings Sara Broadwater, Nancy Pennington (Jim), John Jessup (Ida), Max Jessup (Rosemary), Eleanor Painter (Don), Joy Woodruff (Tim), and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. Memorial service will be held October 20, 2013 at Rancho Las Palmas Country Club at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the American Red Cross or the Seattle Children's Hospital.
