Lonnee Garbis Obituary

Lonnee Wynn Garbis died peacefully at his home in Palm Springs, Calif. on Thursday, October 28, 2010, following a yearlong battle with cancer. He was born on August 14, 1951 in Provo, Utah to Spiro George Garbis and Pearl Schweitzer Garbis. Soon after this birth, the family moved to Sacramento County, Calif. where they resided in Citrus Heights. When Lon was nine years old his mother died from cancer. A year later his father remarried and so, Virginia Williams Garbis was the person who raised Lon and whom he referred to as his mother. He attended elementary school in Citrus Heights, middle school in Sacramento, Cordova High School in Rancho Cordova, a suburb of Sacramento and Sacramento City College. In 1980, his father also died from cancer. Lon remained in the Sacramento area, working in a variety of retail businesses as a General Manager as well as in the field of sales and finance. In 1996 he moved to San Diego for a brief time, and then relocated to Palm Springs, where he resided until his death. He is survived by his brother, Leslee W. Garbis of Captain Cook, Hawaii; his step-mother, Virginia Williams Garbis of Santa Clara, Calif.; a step-sister, Sherilyn Owren of Sunnyvale, Calif.; his loving friends and caregivers: Brian Secore, Vicky Seaman, Tim Black and Ron Quinto all of Palm Springs. We would like to acknowledge and thank the staff of Serenity Hospice for their outstanding medical care and support during these last few weeks of Lon's life. A memorial service is planned for Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the home of Ron Quinto, 2388 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way in Palm Springs, CA.

Lon and I were partners in Sacramento for about 9 years. I hadn't heard from him since last summer and just discovered that he passed away. I'll always remember him. Thank you to everyone that looked after him these past few years.

Lonnee was one of the first people I met when I moved into an apartment building in Cathedral City. Lonnee didn't trust me much at first, mainly because I was a 'straight' person moving into a mostly gay apartment complex. But we soon became very close friends, and after a while, I considered him to be my best friend. We were able to communicate with each other in an open and honest way, as only real friends can do.
I will miss you, my friend, and although we had talked a lot about death, and how you had accepted it, this does not make it any easier for us that are left behind.
God has taken a truly gentle soul.
