Richard Johnson Obituary

Richard Melvin Johnson of Palm Springs, Calif. passed away October 25, 2010. He was born January 18, 1932 in Taft, Calif. to parents Melvin and Otha Johnson. He spent his formative years in Long Beach, Calif. He graduated from Poly High, L.B. City College and Long Beach State. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Richard spent 30 plus years in the education fields in various locations in Southern California and with the Armed Forces in Spain and Germany.
After returning from Germany, Richard married Janet Powell, they spent 44 years together. Upon retirement in 1989, they moved to Palm Springs. In the last 22 years, he was an active volunteer at the Top of the Tram, the Navigator's Desk and the USO at the Palm Springs airport. Richard's passion was snow skiing, sports cars, motorcycles and reading.
He is survived by his wife, Janet; daughter, Linda Perry; and son, David Powell.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the USO, Palm Springs airport or Hanson House, Palm Springs.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 3-5:00 PM, Sunday, November 7, 2010 at Hanson House, Palm Springs.

I met Dick nearly four years ago while volunteering at the USO. I've enjoyed serving with him there, and have fond memories of him. I offer my heartfelt condolences for your loss. He will be missed by all who knew him.
