Shirley Harris Obituary

Shirley Ann Harris, 78, died Saturday, October 16, 2010, at home in Durango, Colo. Mrs. Harris has lived part time in La Quinta, Calif. and Durango, Colo. since 2004. Visitation will be held at Wiefel Funeral Home Chapel in Banning, Calif., on Friday, October 22, 2010, from noon to 1:30 PM. A graveside service will follow at 2:15 PM. at Stewart Sunnyslope Cemetery of Beaumont, Calif., and Father John Domas will be officiating. Mrs. Harris was born May 14, 1932, in Detroit, Mich., daughter of Steven and Helen Karabas. Shirley was raised as an active Catholic and grew up in Michigan. She was married to Norman Andrew Luce in Wisconsin and they moved to Seattle, Wash., and then to the greater Los Angeles, Calif., area. The family then made a move to Beaumont, Calif., where she spent most of her life. She was later married to Laurence Harris in Riverside, Calif., and continued to live in Beaumont. She moved to La Quinta, Calif., in 2004, and spent her time there and in Durango. Shirley worked primarily in the physical therapy field as an assistant. She was passionate for the care of her patients as well as her co-workers. She was a devoted animal lover and enjoyed her walks with the family dogs and her wildlife friends. She attended to her flower garden daily. Her deep love of her grandchildren and family was her focus. She was a tireless worker, putting in many double shifts, holidays and overtime hours so that she could give to her children. Shirley is remembered as opinionated and feisty, a ball of energy and a spitfire by her daughter, Mary. She is survived by daughter, Mary (Wayne) Price of Durango, Colo.; daughter, Terry Ann (Harold) Hanvey of Beaumont, Calif.; daughter, Shirley Luce of Visalia, Calif.; son, Thomas (Christina) Estrada of Indio, Calif.; daughter, Laurie (Matthew) Albright of Woodlake, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and beloved friend and pet, Mr. Roberts. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Norman Andrew Luce; husband, Laurence Harris; and grandson, Joseph Estrada.
