Kachinas Kutenai Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 14 to Jan. 19, 2010.
January 14, 1935 - January 1, 2010 Kachinas S. Kutenai passed away peacefully at dawn January 1, 2010 at the age of 74 near her children in Los Angeles, Calif. Most recently a resident of Palm Springs, our cherished mother, sister, teacher and friend leaves behind children Norman and Jennifer Auther. She is also survived by her siblings, Ted White, Jerry Soriano, Sandra Ramirez and Emma Kelley; sister-in-law, Earline Auther; and 15 nieces, nephews and their children. Kutenai attended San Jose High school in California before graduating with an R.N. from Providence nursing school. In 1951, she and her then-fiancé, Norman V. Auther of Berkeley, joined the U.S. Army. Kutenai served as a Lieutenant Nurse during the Korean War. She married Norman Auther in 1959. She worked as a registered nurse for 46 years in the San Francisco Bay area and Reno, Nevada giving in her personal life and helping anyone she could with anything they needed. She worked tirelessly during the 1970s as a drug counselor and wrote numerous grants earmarked to aid primarily Vietnam Vets. Returning to her Apache roots, she studied and mastered Native American history and would grow to become recognized as an expert on alternative healing methods in both the USA and in Europe. She authored several books, including poems in "The Book of Love," and decades later she published "American Indian Healing" and "Medicine Woman Speaks." Kutenai later moved to Palm Springs, where she founded the Sacred Rainbow Circle Foundation and American Indian Healing Temple. Her passing followed a long illness, which she faced without fear and a healthy sense of humor. She now joins her beloved mother, Ruth Mae White, a reunion she always said she looked forward to most. Recently Kutenai wrote: "Throughout all life, choices must be thoughtfully made. To go, to stay, to speak to pray, to step back observe oneself and know that one strong move establishes who we are as human beings, reliably are!" A Private Memorial is pending at Mt. Tamalpais State Park in Marin County, California. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Los Angeles Mission, 303 East 5th Street. Los Angeles, Calif. 90013.

A beautiful soul has blessed us and moved on to the greater yet to be. I first met Kachinas when I was attending Humboldt State University in 1976 and then again in 1980 at University of Nevada, Reno when I was teaching. She was an insightful, respectful and sincere guest speaker. From 1980 through 1994 she and I became friends...during that time and others we shared sacred space holding healing circles in the community. The last time I saw her was when I called for healers to come to support a community circle during 1992 LA Riots. She came with her clarity of oneness and loving kindness. I am sorry I did not stay in contact with her. God bless her and us all.

I met this beautiful healer, medicine woman, native grandmother, friend in the early 90's. I had the privilege of assisting her in sweat lodge ceremonies in San Diego and Palm Springs as fire keeper. She had a tremendous impact on me and my family and will be in our hearts until the end of time. She taught me the way of the peaceful warrior. On the medicine wheel and the four directions, she navigated with grace while maintaining a sense of humor. She respected animal spirits and her connection with mother earth and father sky were strengthened with every ceremony and ritual she performed. She ministered my wedding in '99 and left an indelible mark on my life. Until we meet again. Much respect grandmother. Aho.

I knew Kachinas as a strong but gentle healer. She helped me with several issues after I had a major life shift and she worked with me for quite a while to be sure I had integrated all my lessons in life. I met her at a Mind,
Body and Spirit fair in San Francisco at a Workshop she taught and I was impressed with her knowledge and authenticity, both as a registered nurse and an indigenous healer. She went out of her way to be helpful and friendly and I will never forget her words of wisdom. She made a meditative tape with guidance and my new name, Adakai, after I had practiced her lessons and I treasure it greatly. I'm very sad to learn of her passing, but I know she is strong in the Spirit world. I feel blessed to have known her. May the Good Spirits hold her lovingly in the center of the hoop.

Grandmother I walked through the woods today and you were heavy on my mind. I recalled the last email I sent trying to reach you and realized I had let my pursuit of communication fall to the wayside. Regrets are useless love will heal. Wishing you peace and light on the other side. Your lessons will go on - Aho -

Dear Kutenai, you were my spiritual teacher and also my friend. I shall miss you. You always inspired me with your reverence for our planet and creatures, your compassion, and dedication to healing. I appreciated your joy, wisdom, honesty and humor. Your spirituality was balanced with the practical. I was lucky to be your friend. I am honored that my photograph graces your page.

Grandmother, often you are in my thoughts. Gliding in, and over me, like when I look above and see a winged one above me. The memory of you is beautiful in my mind. Untainted by time. When I think of you, my heart again longs to see you, shining in reflections between us. I told you to Keep Brave when I saw you last. As you did for me. I said I loved you and you said the same. -In life you told me to pray more. I will do so. And whenever I long again to see you, I will look no further than my own heart. It was truly love at first sight Grandmother. Just like you said. <3 Always, your Granddaughter, in spirit and in life, Viola

I first read your mothers book about 15yrs ago. She got me in touch with my spiritual side and I valued her. I moved away from San Diego and lost touch with myself. I have looked for your mother and her center over the years but found nothing. It is amazing that I found this so soon after your gifted mother passed away. She is an inspiration to me and her gifts will continue inspire me. I'm am sorry that she is gone and that I will never get to meet her, but I am happy that she is with her mother and out of pain. Much Love and Happiness

Unable to find out where she was for the past 2 years, the news came to me through a friend reading the local newspaper. A candle has been lit and burning non stop ever since with her picture glowing in its light. I am overwhelmed with great deep sorrow and love all at once, ever so grateful for our friendship and past times of being together. Her main ongoing message of forgiveness is the best lesson of all, not spoken like church but underscored with profound history and wisdom. Her smile is forever branded in my heart, that enormous smile as big as the sky. I am smiling now just thinking about it! No matter who you are, if you knew Kutenai, its heart to heart timelessness. A love that knows no time, that seperation cannot change. We shall all meet again. Much love to everyone. Please tell me about the pending memorial service at Mt. Tamalpais. Blessings to all. There is always more going on than what we can see.
