Ms. Lavona Jean Shea passed away in her sleep on January 15th, 2012, in Palm Springs. She was born on September 28th, 1943, in East Saint Louis, Illinois, daughter of the late William and the late Eunice (Gerrish) Shea. She was a retired Sergeant from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. Lavona attended schools in Washington, D.C., and in Belleville, Illinois. She graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1965. Lavona moved to Lynwood, California, in 1968. After joining the Sheriff's Department in February 1969, her law enforcement career spanned 31 years. Following her retirement in March 2000, Lavona traveled extensively and enjoyed entertaining friends at her homes in California and Mexico. Spending time with her family was an important part of Lavona's life. She is survived by two brothers, Tom (& Martie) Shea of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Mike (& Laura) Shea of Nashua, New Hampshire, and two sisters, Sharon (& Scott) Perry of Montgomery Center, Vermont, and Lisa (& Rich) Bell of O'Fallon, Illinois. But the pride and joy of her life were her 12 nieces and nephews and her 12 great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her parents, Lavona was predeceased by a brother at birth, William Shea, and a sister at birth, Karen Shea. A Celebration of Life for Lavona will be held at the Spa Resort Casino, 100 North Indian Canyon Drive, in Palm Springs, on Saturday, February 11th, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 pm. She will be interred at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Belleville, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Lavona's memory to the Survivors and Dependents Fund #220, Sheriff's Relief, 11515 South Colima Road, Building B, Whittier, California, 90604.
