Johnnie "Big John" Aguilar, 67, of Navasota, died Friday afternoon at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.
A gathering of family and friends will take place Thursday, September 5, 2013, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Christ Our Light Catholic Church (christourlight.org
), 9677 Hwy 6 in Navasota. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 5, 2013, at Christ Our Light Catholic Church with Rev. Rodolfo "JoJo" Cal-Ortiz as the celebrant. Cremation will follow.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Ganske, David Small, Cody Small, James Brak, Steven Rosario, David Anzaldua, Edward Caballero and J.W. Charles. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Frega and Manuel Leos.
Big John was born January 18, 1946 in Navasota to Jose Ortega and Victoria Garcia Aguilar. A lifelong resident of Navasota, Big John was a graduate of Navasota High School and faithful member of Christ Our Light Catholic Church. He married Helen Anne Caballero on October 21, 1979 and their wedding vows were blessed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on January 18, 1980. Big John was a maintenance supervisor for Navasota ISD.
With a heart bigger than him, Big John loved working for NISD and helping his fellow employees and the kids he loved dearly. He had a passion for anything "western" collection guns and coins, cowboy and indian history and art. With his love of people, Big John loved gatherings of family and friends so he could BBQ for all of them.
Big John was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Joe Aguilar, Jr. and mother-in-law, Irene Murphy.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Helen Aguilar of Navasota; sisters, Mary Soto, Tommie Cumpian, both of Navasota, and Julia Whiteside of Los Angeles, CA; brothers, Jessie Aguilar and wife Sara of Bryan, Tony Aguilar of Dallas and Julio Aguilar of Cleveland, TX; Sisters-in-law, Marie Caballero and husband Steve Frega of Lancaster, CA and Stella Leos and husband Manuel of Los Angeles, CA; brother-in-law, Edward "Eddie" Caballero of Navasota along with numerous other relatives and a great number of friends.
In lieu of flowers, it has been suggested for memorials in John's name to Christ Our Light Catholic Church Children's Bell Choir.
