Willie Joe O'Brien, 87, of Plantersville, died Sunday morning, August 18, 2013, at Grimes-St. Joseph Health Center in Navasota. Calling hours will be held from 12:00 to 5:00 pm Tuesday at Lindley-Robertson-Holt Funeral Home with a gathering of family and friends to follow until 7:00 pm at which time a prayer service will be held.
Funeral services will take place 10:00 am Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1530 E. Washington in Navasota with Pastor Don Kasper officiating. All are invited to a lunch that will be served immediately following the service in the church hall. Graveside service and interment will be at 2:00 pm in Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
Willie was born November 30, 1925 in Houston to Willie Joe and Mary Gertrude Harper O'Brien. He was a 1943 graduate of Reagan High School and immediately joined the U.S. Navy reaching the rank of Aviation Ordnanceman 3C. After WWII, he enrolled at the University of Houston where he earned his BA in Engineering and a Masters in Business. In 1968 he formed Willie O'Brien, Inc. and worked as a engineering consultant in the oil and gas industry. Willie retired in 2001, but continued consulting from time to time.
On September 1, 1985 he married Mildred L. Esterak Sontag at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Houston and was confirmed in the Lutheran Church December 15th, 1985 by Pastor Eugene Heckmann. Willie and Millie retired to Plantersville in 1992 where they became active members of Trinity Lutheran Church and Navasota VFW Post 4006. Willie was a life member of the University of Houston Alumni Association and the Men's Club of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife Mildred "Millie" L. O'Brien of Plantersville; sons, William Patrick, Dennis Kevin and James Terrance O'Brien; a brother, Harris Monroe O'Brien and wife Almalee; 3 granddaughters; a great grandchild; Millie's children, Charlie Sontag, Jr. and wife, Joyce and Lynda Marderness.
