April 29, 1916 - May 22, 2013
Gladys Lucille (Collier) Stone 97, of College Station, Texas passed away May 22, 2013 at Lampstand Rehab and Nursing Home in Bryan, Texas.
Gladys was born April 29, 1916 in Hope, Arkansas to Jesse Aubrey Collier, Sr. and Lillie Eudora Henry. Throughout her life, she and Jake lived in Arkansas, Oxnard, California, Galveston, Navasota, and finally, Bryan and College Station. She started the 1st Commercial Washateria in Navasota with the "wringer type" washing machines. Then worked as a Telephone operator and was "on duty" to alert the firemen when the Navasota Ice House caught on fire. Many years later, she transferred her energy to work at Texas A&M University in Food Service. Being a member of the A&M Church of Christ when the Sonshine School began as a day school, and loving children, she became the greeter and comforter to the parents and children as they were introduced to their new school.
She was known to have a "green thumb", because she always grew beautiful flowers and loved arranging them for the front of the auditorium at church. Thus she enjoyed the Brazos Valley Garden Club in her later years.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Carey "Jake" Stone; son, James Larry Stone; grandson, Carey Reese Stone; sister, Kathleen Delony; and brothers, Harrell H. "Bud" Collier, and J. Aubrey Collier, Jr.
Gladys is survived by her sisters, Lillie Mae (Collier) Erwin of Searcy, Arkansas and Patsy Lou (Collier) Rhodes of Hope, Arkansas; son, Richard D. Stone of Caldwell, Texas; daughters, Gerry J. (Stone) and L. Garry Adams of College Station, Texas; Sandra (Stone) Tarver and J. Steve Tarver of Humble, Texas; daughter-in-law, Sandra Stone of Columbus, MS; grandchildren, A. Paige Adams, Thaddeus H. Adams, J. Sean Tarver, Nicole Tarver, Sheryl Stone, Lisa DuLaney, Laura Rasco, Larry Stone, Jennifer Romero, Janis Godby and Julie Cochran; and 22 great-grandchildren.
