Leonardo Auernheimer Obituary

August 27, 1936 - December 2, 2010

Leonardo ""Pepe"" Auernheimer, 74, passed away Thursday, December 2, 2010 at his home in College Station.

A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Thursday, December 9, at Hillier Funeral Home Chapel in Bryan with Dr. Thomas Saving officiating.

He was born in Argentina on August 27, 1936 to Jose Ignacio Auernheimer and Maria Elena Savanti de Auernheimer. He graduated from the University of Buenos Aires and received his Ph. D in Economics from the University of Chicago in 1974.

Prior to that, he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Vicosa, Brazil, and upon graduation he came to the Economics Department at Texas A&M University, where he was a Professor of Economics until his death, and the Department Head from 2002 to 2006.

While at Texas A&M he visited several times both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund as a Visiting Scholar, and was a Visiting Professor at ITAM, in Mexico City, the Centro de Estudios Macroeconomicos de Argentina, in Buenos Aires, and the University of Goettingen in Germany. He consulted on macroeconomics policies for international organizations in several countries throughout Latin America and the Middle and Far East.

Leonardo was fortunate to have many good friends, some of his own generation and others quite younger, and among them many of his former and current graduate students now living in the USA and around the world. He loved bluebonnets and marveled at listening to mocking birds. He always wanted to have a daughter, as he and Christa were blessed to have, and she and her husband blessed them again with the gift of three beautiful grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife and friend of 46 years, Christa Auernheimer (nee Schulle); his daughter, Martina Isabel Auernheimer Honea and son-in-law, Mark Stephen Honea; grandchildren, Courtney Ann and Cassidy Caroline Honea, both 8, and Caden James Honea, 6, all of Woodbridge, Va.; sister-in-law, Ulla Borchard (nee Schulle) of Goettingen, Germany; cousins, nieces and nephews of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations may be made to Hospice Brazos County, 502 W. 26th, Bryan, Texas or Brazos Animal Shelter 2207 Finfeather Road, Bryan, Texas 77801.

Dr. Auerenheimer taught me at Texas A&M. He was an absolute delight to learn from every day... filled with joy, enthusiasm and great passion for his subject and students. May his family and friends be richly blessed with peace and joy, comforted by the memories of beautiful times spent with him. May his soul rest in peace, may we one day meet again.

Dear Family, for once in my life I am speechless, Pepe was for me, my father. he spent quality time with me. he was my cheerleader, he was my hero. I never missed one of his visits when he visted Martina, Mark and the kids. I had to be reminded that he came to visit his family, and I guess I felt I was a member to. My wife Linda would tell me, "enough leave Pepe alone to visit with the grandkids, When I heard he was coming for a visit I think I was more excited
then anyone. I will miss my friend, cheerleader, and father, more then you will know. Love Linda & Bob Gorde

A great ambassador for intuitive economic thinking and the only Professor that could make his students wonder whether the law of gravity applied to chalk erasers. Pepe contributed a lot to the character of the department that made studying economics at A&M a special experience.

Pepe and I arrived at the Department of Economics at approximately the same time. He was a most excellent man and immense fun to be around. Imagine, an economist who was fun to be around! We shall all miss him.

I am extremely sad to hear this news. To me, Pepe was a great advisor and a friend.
I will remember him as someone who expressed his opinion honestly with a tact, an avid reader of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and an economist who can compare abstraction in painting to economic models. He equally appreciated elegance in an economic proof as much as in food. As a mentor he could see his students as peers.
We will miss you Pepe!

Pepe was a great friend through 44 years of brotherhood. We have only wonderful memories of joyful times together, either in Brasil,or in the States.
To our beloved Chris, Martina, Marc and children we send our most sorrowful embrace.

Pepe was my professor at Texas A&M, where he taught International macroeconomics. He was one of the most "intuitive" professors I have come across. He was an avid soccer enthusiasist and one of the more friendly faces around the department. It is with great admiration I remember Pepe. I pray that his souls rests in peace and his family members find solace in Pepe's charm.
